History and Status of the Welsh Language
Incomplete draft of 8th January 1995, last changed 24th September 1999. This document is written to accompany Mark Nodine's online Welsh lessons and used to be an appendix of that document, although I think it has now been removed from there (which makes the huge numbers of accesses to it the more confusing). It aims to answer, from the - perhaps necessarily opinionated - standpoint of a native Welsh speaker, some questions about the historical, political and cultural background of the language that he or I think might be asked by a learner from outside that culture. The present document has been drafted as responses to a list of questions, originally based on those that Mark thought might be asked:

London Guide Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland Welsh Language Guide The language of Wales, more properly called Cymraeg in preference to Welsh (A Germanic word denoting "foreigner"), belongs to a branch of Celtic, an Indo-European language. The Welsh themselves are descendants of the Galatians, to whom Paul wrote his famous letter. Their language is a distant cousin to Irish and Scots Gaelic and a close brother to Breton. Welsh is still used by about half a million people within Wales and possibly another few hundred thousand in England and other areas overseas. In most heavily populated areas of Wales, such as the Southeast (containing the large urban centers of Cardiff, Newport and Swansea), the normal language of everyday life is English, but there are other areas, notably in the Western and Northern regions, (Gwynedd and Dyfed particularly) where the Welsh language remains strong and highly visible. The Welsh word for their country is Cymru (Kumree), the land of the Comrades; the people are known as Cymry (Kumree) and the language as Cymraeg (Kumrige). Regional differences in spoken Welsh do not make speakers in one area unintelligible to those in another (as is so often claimed), standard Welsh is understood by Welsh speakers everywhere.

he Castles of Wales has always recognized the importance of supporting efforts aimed at preserving the ancient Celtic language of Wales. Although considerable efforts were made in the past to suppress the learning of Welsh, it nevertheless survives as a true living language, and today there are many communities throughout Wales where Welsh is still the language of everyday life for a majority of the people. W e are therefore pleased to be able to present several pages at the Castles of Wales web site in Welsh (listed below). Additional translations are planned for the future. Clwb Cymraeg Ardal Chiltern , is an affinity group dedicated to helping its members and sympathisers use and enjoy the Welsh language. As its name suggests we are based in the Chiltern Hills in the English heartland. Our aim is to provide an enthusiastic support from which to maintain our members cultural and linguistic links with Wales.
Every year Clwb Cymraeg Ardal Chiltern offers: For additional information, please contact Marie Tippins or Nick Hollinghurst
Clwb Cymraeg Ardal Chiltern also publishes a newsletter for everyone wishing to be on its mailing list Clwb Cymraeg Ardal Chiltern began life as a small evening class in September 1986 for complete beginners, and from a seemingly inauspicious beginning went on to send people through O and A level examinations in Welsh, which were held here in Leighton Buzzard with the permission and encouragement of the examination authority in Wales. We have continued life as a club combining a desire to strengthen our knowledge of Welsh and to provide a Welsh cultural resource for sympathisers locally. If you would like to learn Welsh, but cannot afford to go to Wales, write to us. We will do our best to help.

Introduction
This course is one suitable for beginners. The main emphasis of the course is in developing conversational skills in Welsh as it is currently spoken (as contrasted with teaching the forms needed for understanding literary Welsh). The material is an indirect descendent of the Cymraeg Byw movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This course does not assume a general proficiency in learning languages, nor any previous background in Welsh. The course is also developed in such a way that it can be distributed either through an ASCII medium wrapped as a setext, or made available in HTML on the World Wide Web Geraint Jones (Rhydychen) has written answers for common questions about Welsh and Wales This course is still under construction. Please report any problems to me via e-mail.
