The Tour of Wales Site
Submitted by admin on Fri, 2006-09-01 21:27. Welcome to the new look Tour of Wales site. Look at What's New . A list of the pages that have been recently added or updated. Since 1993, this site has been providing information about Wales and a tour of some of its sights. However, as other sites came on stream - such as the Welsh tourist board, Cadw and others, this site began slipping in the search rankings and started to suffer from neglect. Rather than let it die altogether, we are now repurposing the site. Some of the extra stuff that didn't really belong here is being given its own site. Few places on Earth have so exercised the imagination as the land of Wales. From the dawn of history this small corner of the British Isles has been inhabited by people and nations, and the scars of a turbulent history are forever etched in the unique and enigmatic countryside. Here you will find a gallery of images of Wales.

The Welsh Language BY SWANSEA VALLEY HOLIDAY COTTAGES
At the start of the 20th century, the Welsh language was spoken by almost half of the population of Wales. By 1991, although the number of people able to speak the language was still more than half a million (508,098), this represented just 18.7% of the Welsh population. The Swansea Valley is one of the areas in Wales where the Welsh language is still fluently spoken and it can be said to have a character, and to some extent a dialect , that is all its own. Our literature loving holidaymakers will be pleased to known that Welsh language literary classics are now being translated into English for the first time. The language of Wales, more properly called Cymraeg in preference to Welsh (A Germanic word denoting "foreigner"), belongs to a branch of Celtic, an Indo-European language descended from something first spoken on the steppes of central Asia. Its nearest cousins are Breton and Cornish.

Gio’s Italian...Welsh and Ethiopian Job!!!
Ethiopia of course is renowned for its long-distance runners, but one of its population has now gone that extra mile and is showing the utmost regard for his adopted country...by learning Welsh!!! Welsh Ambulance Service Paramedic Giovanni Riva’s recent application for a week’s intensive Welsh course at the Welsh Language Centre in Nant Gwrtheyrn on the Lleyn Peninsula this coming Autumn was successful.
“I’ve been in Wales for over 25 years and have always wanted to learn the language of what I regard now as my home country, but I’ve never managed to get round to it properly,” said Gio who hails from Addis Ababa where he lived with his Ethiopian mother and Italian father. “I went to a basic Welsh evening class last year under Cardiff University’s Welsh for Adults and that gave me a real bug wanting to speak Welsh fluently. I can already speak two Ethiopian dialects, Amharic and Tigrai, and also Italian and English so that should put me in good stead to learn a fifth language.” Gio’s first experience of hearing Welsh being spoken was when he first moved to Wales in 1983 and worked on a farm in Ystradgynlais for a couple of years: “I used to go to the market with the farmer and I was amazed listening to Welsh being spoken,” said Gio, “I thought that if I taped the farmers speaking I’d be be able to follow what they said because I honestly thought they were speaking in reverse, but I soon realised that it was actually a different language!”

Modern Welsh, like English, makes very little use of inflectional endings; British, the Brythonic language from which Welsh is descended, was, however, an inflecting language like Latin, with word endings marking such grammatical categories as noun case and verb tense. The spoken language occurs in several local dialects but has been declining on the whole since the accession of Henry Tudor (Henry VII), of Welsh descent, to the English throne in 1485. At present few people speak only Welsh.
