Foreman Click here to purchase on Amazon Vikram Seth's book Three Chinese Poets , a well-done and laudable (if somewhat irritating) collection of translations from the three great Tang poets is definitely to be recommended, but not without qualifications. The Good Seth has refused to fashion his renderings in the manner of Ezra Pound's free verse versions, and so stands apart from most other translators of Tang verse. This choice is a wise one, since those translators who go following in Pound's footsteps have inevitably stepped in the same dogshit Pound did. While Medieval China saw the birth of many things we think of as essentially modern such as ticking clocks, air-conditioning and gas cylinders, Literary Modernism was not one of these inventions- and it is wrong for a translator to lead English speakers to believe otherwise. Instead, Seth's renderings are in rhymed, accentual (or at times accentual-syllabic) verse. Rightly so, since Tang poetry followed rhyme patterns and could often be metrically quite intricate. Mercifully, too, the translations, by and large, are actually good poetry. Take for example the following lines excerpted from one of his Du Fu translations:
