Scotland An Introduction to Welsh Literature Those of us who know better recognize that from evidence of surviving works by sixth century poets Taliesin and Aneirin, Welsh can claim to be the oldest attested vernacular literature in Europe. (Surviving literature from England is in Old English and thus not in the vernacular: only scholars can read it for understanding; Scottish literature is mainly written in Middle English). In addition, both Taliesin and Aneirin were inheritors of an already old and sophisticated bardic tradition that was common to the Celtic peoples of Europe. Wales possesses a rich literature that amply rewards its study. It has a long and impressive history. The Early Years Of Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales in 1916, to Norwegian parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl (née Hesselberg). Dahl's father had moved from Sarpsborg in Norway and settled in Cardiff in the 1880s, and his mother came over to marry his father in about 1910. Roald was named after the polar explorer Roald Amundsen, a national hero in Norway at the time. He spoke Norwegian at home with his parents and sisters, Astri, Alfhild, and Else. Dahl and his sisters were christened at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff, where their parents worshipped.

Home Library Miscellaneous Columbia Encyclopedia Welsh literature, literary writings in the Welsh language. Early Works The earliest Welsh literature is preserved in about half a dozen manuscripts written with one exception after the 12th cent. However, the literature was highly developed well before the Norman Conquest. Of early extant works the most important, the so-called Four Ancient Books of Wales, are The Book of Aneurin, The Book of Taliesin, The Black Book of Caemarthen, and The Red Book of Hergest. Much of the poetry in these manuscripts is credited to four late 6th-century bards- Aneurin Taliesin , Myrddin (the Merlin of Arthurian romance), and Llywarch Hen-and most of the anonymous poetry is marked by style and subject as belonging to their various schools. Early Welsh poetry is epic, romantic, and historical. Songs in praise of heroes (many pre-Christian and mythological) and elegiac poems of desolation and longing frequently appear. They are marked by a rich, musical style, displaying the verbal felicity of a highly developed art. Among early prose survivals, the classic is the Mabinogion (set down c.1060). In this work the cycle of stories concerning the old Celtic gods and heroes-similar to those in Irish and Arthurian literature-is expanded by the addition of later stories and partly transformed by numerous Welsh revisions.

[c]yfrol dreiddgar a diddorol . . . ’ Llais Llên This is the fifth in a series of volumes outlining the history and development of Welsh literature from its beginnings in the sixth century to the present day. The ten essays in this volume, the first of which describes the remarkable growth of the Welsh press, provide an overview of the literary scene. Four chapters deal with the kind of poetry written and the obstacles confronting the poets; the emergence of the novel and drama is pursued in two chapters; there is a chapter on Emrys ap Iwan, the most arresting cultural commentator of his day; and another on the early travel books of O. M. Edwards whose influence on the twentieth-century literary revival was seminal. A final chapter shows that in the closing quarter of the century there were critics of a more liberal cast than Morris-Jones who were intent on bringing Welsh literature into contact with the surge of creativity revolutionizing European culture. This book, much of which is based on recent research, shows clearly that there is much more to nineteenth-century Welsh literature than has been revealed by the dismissive view of it. By considering it within a liberating socio-cultural context, its significance is reappraised, thus continuing the recent reclamation of the literature of this period.

TRAVEL Travel Home London Guide Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland Chapter 1: Heroic Poetry Surviving Welsh language poems, part of the heroic tradition, date all the way back to the late sixth century AD, making them part of the oldest attested vernacular in Europe. Two poets who continued what seems to have been an old Celtic bardic tradition of elaborate sound patterns and social ideals were Taliesin and Aneirin. Both these poets lived in northwestern Britain (Strathclyde) during the time of the Anglo-Saxon invasions. The Britons were desperately trying to hold on to their lands in the face of unrelenting pressure from the Germanic tribes now holding most of the eastern half of the island. Apart from what is now known as Wales, the British (or Brythonic) kingdoms that survived were Rheged, Gododdin and Strathclyde. These were cut off from Wales politically in the seventh century, but Strathclyde continued as a centre of the old poetic traditions for a few more centuries when the burden (and the honor) fell to Wales. Taliesin exemplified the image of the poet as sober craftsman and upholder of the social order. His poems are above all songs of praise to his lord, the ideal ruler Urien Rheged (King of Rheged), who protected his people by bravery and ferocity in battle, but who was magnanimous and generous in peace. The poems remind the king of his responsibilties at the same time they remind his followers of their duties to their leader. The vivid impressions of the poems are compressed into complex patterns of alliteration and internal rhyme that later developed into the peculiarly Welsh system known as cynghanedd in which key words are linked by repetition of consonants. In his elegy on the death of Urien, Taliesin incorporated Christian elements such as the prayer for the soul beginning and ending the poem, but also the pagan ideal of worship of the warrior leader.

Double click any English word, to find Turkish meaning The term Welsh literature may be used to refer to any literature originating from Wales or by Welsh writers. However, it more often refers to literature written in the Welsh language . Literature by Welsh writers in the English language is usually called Anglo-Welsh literature or Welsh literature in English.
This article will give an overview of the history of Welsh-language literature. For information about Welsh literature in English, see Anglo-Welsh literature . For more information about Welsh-language literature refer to the articles noted.
After literature written in the classical languages , literature in the Welsh language is the oldest surviving literature in Europe. The Welsh literary tradition still lives, stretching from the sixth century to the twentieth first. Its fortunes have fluctuated over the centuries, in line with those of the Welsh language. Even today the language of the early Middle Ages is recognisable to some modern-day Welsh speakers.

What is Anglo-Welsh Literature and why Should Anyone Care?
( This article was originally contributed to Manuel Marino's Arts Weblog. Reviews of some of the authors and works mentioned in the article can be found on the Americymru Book Reviews pages.)
But what is Anglo-Welsh literature and why should anyone care? I would argue that at its best it provides a unique perspective (in the English speaking world at least) on modern ideas of national, cultural and personal identity. As Gwyn Williams once famously said:- "The Welsh as a people have lived by making and remaking themselves in generation after generation, usually against the odds, usually within a British context." Both Welsh-language and Anglo-Welsh literature have played a prominent role in that process. It is not a literature of rage. At the risk of offending a portion of my audience I will say that English colonial rule has for the most part been far too benign to produce a majority violent reaction but it is a literature of self-assertion and defiance, albeit sometimes confused and unfocused.
A far more extreme adaptation and 'remaking' (or failure to adapt) can be found in the pages of 'Niall Griffiths' stark and brutal novel.."Sheepshagger". Here we see what happens when ancient tribal resentments, personal greivance and drug-addled inarticulacy combine to prevent 'personal growth'. The desperate and bestial acts of violence committed by the novels anti-hero are the products of a sense of loss and a seething resentment directed against those who have deprived him. He is unable to articulate his impotent rage by any other means. He asserts himself as a serial-killer. It should be pointed out that this exploration of the darker side of the Welsh 'psyche', whilst magnificent, also contains passages of graphic violence which would make Brett Easton Ellis blush.
