Culture of Western Sahara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The people of Western Sahara speak the Ḥassānīya dialect of Arabic , also spoken in northern Mauritania . They are of mixed Arab- Berber descent, but many consider themselves Arab . They claim that they descend from the Beni Hassan , an Arab tribe, who invaded the Western Sharan desert in the 14th century. The Sahrawis are Muslims of the Sunni sect and the Maliki law school. Their interpretation of Islam has traditionally being quite liberal and adapted to nomad life (i.e. generally functioning without mosques The clan - and tribe -based society underwent a massive social upheaval in 1975, when a large portion of the population fled fighting in the country and settled in the refugee camps of Tindouf Algeria , breaking up families and clans. The Polisario Front , which runs the camps, has attempted to modernize their society, placing a public emphasis on education, the eradication of tribalism and the emancipation of women. The role of women in camps was enhanced by their shouldering of the main responsibility for the camps and government bureaucracy during the war years, as virtually the entire male population was enrolled in the Polisario army.

Western Sahara - Definition
Western Sahara (EH in ISO 3166-1 ) is a region of northwestern Africa , bordering Morocco on the north, Algeria on the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. The largest city is El Aaiún ( Laayoune ), containing 90% of the population. Whether it is part of Morocco or is the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) , is disputed. At present it is largely occupied, and entirely claimed, by Morocco, but this claim is far from universally recognized and in fact a majority of other nations do not recognize the Moroccan claim. In the peace plan a future Western Sahara Authority (WSA) is envisaged. Western Sahara is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, with some rankings listing it as the least dense.

MODEL QUEST AFRICA GLOBAL WATER VOLUNTEERS The People A mixture of indigenous Berbers and Arabic tribes the Saharawi peoples' direct ancestors can be traced back to the XVth century when tribes from the Yemen crossed North Africa establishing themselves in the region later to be known as the Western Sahara. The difficult environmental conditions, cold dry winters, scorching summers, low irregular rainfall and rough terrain encouraged the different tribes to coexist and live together. Later, the acceptance of Islam by the berbers and the increasing strength of the arabic culture gave the tribes people a predominantly Arabic bias. As a result of this mixture of tribes the Saharawi people and culture was born. The struggles of the twentieth century against Spain, Morocco and Mauritania saw a strong Saharawi nationalism develop.
