View other movie reviews Find a movie: Whale Rider Ever wondered what nationality Cliff Curtis is? He has ambiguous last name and a dark, multiracial look that typically garner him utility roles as a South American or Arab, but he could pass for any sort of Hispanic/Latino, or even Indian. Well, Curtis is Maori, and he returns to his roots here (albeit in a small role) in Whale Rider , a beautiful new film that is finally seeing a limited release after touring various film circuits and garnering lots of awards (including the Audience Award at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival). Whale Rider hails from New Zealand, up to this point most famous for being the setting for The Lord of the Rings . Australia, its bigger neighbor, typically overshadows New Zealand in terms of films released here, but in the past couple years, Kiwis have managed to surface such diverse films as The Price of Milk and Rain Whale Rider draws upon some of the primordial myths of the Maori, and ties it in with some serious issues that plague many cultures. On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs have always been the first-born and male. Many generations later, the contemporary tale revolves around a young mother whose male newborn twin dies in childbirth. Her young husband flees New Zealand in grief, leaving grandparents Koro and Nanny Flowers to raise the sole survivor, a feisty little girl named Pai, who radiates with life and energy. It's no wonder that her grandmother and the entire community love her, but alas, the grandfather she worships is too busy mourning the loss of the baby boy he expected would lead the tribe to better days.

us with your questions about whaling at whaling@shaw.ca New WCW Publication - Whaling for Food - Now Available Around the world, many coastal communities rely on the cultural, nutritional and economic sustenance whaling provides. In most cases, their whaling traditions and techniques have developed over centuries. In all cases, their concern for the health of their communities is vitally linked to their concern for the health of the whale populations.
Whaling peoples today are a far cry from the industrial whalers of the past century, who slaughtered entire whale populations to feed a global demand for whale oil and bone. Today, from skin boats, small coastal fishing vessels, and dugout canoes, residents of small, often isolated coastal communities around the world subsist wholly or in part on the sustainable, small-scale harvest of cetaceans. Whaling feeds their families, their communities, their economies, and their cultures. For many, centuries of reliance on the products of the hunt have created a vital nutritional, cultural, spiritual and ecological link between whaling peoples and whales. For all, the quantity and quality of food a whale provides remains essential to their overall health and subsistence.

Cool Link: CINEFILES Director's List. Museum Informatics Project, University of California, Berkeley 4/2/02: moved site from Geocities to Eskimo. Hope you like not seeing the nasty GeoCities popups anymore. 12/16/01: moved a bunch of stuff around. Added color scans of some of Whale's paintings under the previously blank section titled The Artist I'm still surprised that the Whale renaissance I expected in the wake of Gods and Monsters has not yet materialized. I'd put Kiss Before the Mirror and Remember Last Night? at the top of the 1930s list of great stylistic pictures. Why are they only accessible via video bootlegs from 16mm collector prints? Rumor has it that Journey's End is going to be screened from a 35mm print at one of the vintage film festivals in 2002.This would well and truly rock as I have only seen it on a bootleg video copy.
