Endangered African Wild Dogs
By Judy Wolfe eHow Contributor updated: September 21, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Endangered African Wild Dogs Animals of exceptional loyalty to their own kind, the endangered wild dogs of Africa roam the grasslands and woodlands of many eastern and southern African national parks in packs, hunting and sharing larger prey.
Their population has never recovered from an early 20th century extermination effort by African farmers protecting their livestock. The U.S. National Zoo estimates that fewer than 5,000 of these animals remain in the wild.
History
  • Africa's wild dogs once roamed over most of sub-Saharan Africa. According to the American Museum of Natural History, they are Africa's most endangered predator. Packs that once contained 100 animals seldom have more than 10.
Human settlement of most of their hunting areas means much of the dogs' prey has also been destroyed. Distemper, rabies and other diseases contracted from domestic dogs have further decimated their numbers.

The African Wild Dogs Endangered Species Found In 25 Countries
The African Wild Dogs, as they are popularly called are found only in Africa. Also known as African Hunting Dog or Painted Dog, they are now endangered because of fast diminishing of habitat as well as lack of hunting. There were around 50,000 of the species found across 39 countries in Africa. But the figure has steeply declined to 3000 across 25 countries.

Wild mustang adoption is an in thing now. Man established his power over the wild life by calming some of the wild beasts and utilizing them in the progress of human civilization. Where ever and whenever man keeps his feet either the animals fled away from the place or obeys them as their masters. Fortunately Wild mustang had managed to escape the hands of miners and Spanish travelers.

The African Wild Dog, or Lycaon pictus , is currently the most endangered predator in Africa. These close relatives of wolves and domesticated dogs are relatively small and compact compared to some of their larger relatives, averaging somewhere between forty and eighty pounds on average, and standing twenty-three to thirty inches at the shoulder. As opposed to five toes, L. pictus has only four on each paw. Their fur is a striking mixture of black, white and yellow, and the pattern these patches create are completely unique to each individual, like fingerprints.
An incredibly efficient hunter, the African Wild Dog has teeth and jaws adapted for eating large quantities of bone. When prey is taken, it is consumed completely. The endurance of L. pictus

Dogs In Heat Metestrus Anestrus 21 Days Bleeding In Female Dogs Can Conceive False Pregnancies
Dogs experience this heat within the second six months of their life. However other animals might not be in heat till the first year of their life. For the female dogs, being in heat is equivalent to menstruating women. It is only during this period that dogs can conceive. Dogs in heat show certain characteristics. This period is marked with the proestrus that involves bleeding of the vagina of the dog. This happens for 4 to 9 days and the vulva shows prominent swelling. There is increased urination and the female dog shows reluctance in yielding to the approaches of the male dog. Following this, the female dog gets receptive towards the male dog and this leads to conception. Yellowish discharge is seen for almost 13 days. This stage is the ideal time to mate. The later symptoms seen in dogs in heat are metestrus and anestrus. Some female dogs experience false pregnancies in the metestrus stage. The ovaries undergo certain changes and are devoid of external changes. Many people are confused about the possibility of a healthy pregnancy when the dog is in heat for the first time. The problem with small dogs is that the changes they go through during this period are hardly noticeable.
