Butterflies Will Find Your Garden Marie Iannotti zSB(3,3) Have you secretly been considering turning your high maintenance mixed border into a wildflower garden? It can be hard to resist when seed companies are out there promoting their instant wildflower gardens in a can, sack or roll. I spoke with a handful of gardeners who gave wildflower meadows a try. Their efforts to date have not met with much success. Many gardeners naively believe you can simply scatter some seeds and wind up with a self-sowing meadow of bluebells and lacecaps. In truth, starting a wildflower garden is often more work than putting in a perennial border and it is not necessarily self-perpetuating. If these plants are truly wild, (weeds, to most highway maintenance crews), why must they be coddled and coaxed out of the ground?

Wild flower gardens are increasing in popularity as gardeners in general are more in tune with nature. Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh with television programmes such as Charlie's Wildlife Gardens, Ground Force, Gardeners' World and Charlie's Garden Army actively encourage gardeners to attract wildlife to their gardens and to grow wild flowers. As the countryside changes and diminishes many of us like to create a miniature countryside in our own gardens. • Choose a clearing that has partial to full sunlight, to make the plants self sustainable. It is always better to start out with a clean patch of clearing, not to plant in the existing vegetation, in order to distinguish between the weeds and the wildflowers. To weed out, mow the area, water it and cover it securely with a clear plastic sheet for six to eight weeks, to kill off the vegetation. Alternately, use herbicides, but care needs to be taken with the other healthy garden plants. Once the existing vegetation is completely cleared, till the soil about a depth of three inches. To ensure killing of the weed seeds left out, spray with a herbicide again. Rake the soil and level it. Leave the grooves in the soil to hold the seeds.
    Now, the planting process,
    • Purchase some packaged seed mixes. Normally, for an acre, four pounds of seeds will do. Check out the details on the seed cover. Most of the wildflower seeds are quite small. To help spreading evenly in the soil, mix in some sand with the seeds. Spread out evenly in the area.

    Maintaining A Control Over Wildflowers
Can a wildflower garden become established and continue to self-sow, without becoming too invasive? Actually, the perennials won't bloom the first year and if you are hoping to enjoy the garden for years to come, an occasional over seeding will help to maintain the balance of plants. This can be done every couple of years or whenever you notice an imbalance, perhaps due to unfavorable weather conditions. If you are planting a large area and are going for a meadow look, you should consider including some grasses in your mixture to fill in thin spots and discourage weeds. Hardy Fescues are a good choice in Northern zones. In warmer climates, Kentucky 31 or Tall Fescue are preferred. Ryegrass and bluegrass tend to be too competitive with the flowers and are not good choices. About 25 pounds of grass seed per acre would do. Once the plants are established they require very little care.

    Gardening With Wild Flowers
    from
The growing interest and admiration gardeners have towards nature is the main factor in the increasing trend towards wild flower gardening. Indeed, many gardeners are no longer happy with their artificial gardening designs and they challenge themselves in undertaking the cultivation of a wild flower garden.
If you want to start a wild flower garden, as with all gardens, the first step is to choose a spot. Since what you're looking for in planting wild flowers is a natural look, your best bet is to choose a place that looks semi-natural such as along the back of your yard or in an area that doesn't look carved out against a fence or next to the patio.
As for conditions, wildflowers are considered to be tough and hardy, existing in conditions which would be highly detrimental to cultivated flowers. Indeed, the sunnier, the better. The only thing that wildflowers really can't tolerate is standing water, so pick a place with good drainage.

How to Grow a Wildflower Garden
Wildflower gardening is the best way to have natural gardens , and almost care-free way to enhance the look of your landscape. To have a successful wildflower garden you need to select plants that are native to the area in which you live. One suggestion for doing this is to visit a local nature preserve . Nature preserves have an abundant supply of wildflowers growing with little to no help from people. It is unlawful in most areas to pick or dig up these flowers, as many are protected species. Most nature preserves have a center where they offer educational material or have displays that will identify the natural elements found there. Many also have nature trails that include information along the walking paths. When you venture out to find native wildflowers, be sure to take a garden notebook along. Jot down the names, colors, and textures of the flowers that interest you. Also take note of the different flowers that are growing together.
Rock gardens are a perfect home to many wildflowers. Consider turning an unsightly area where grass doesn't grow, into a rock garden.

Sunset Nov, 1996 by Jim McCausland Lauren Bonar Swezey
Forget grand meadows. Today's wildflowers grow attractively in small beds and even in pots. New seed mixes make it possible A dozen or so years ago, it was a romantic notion: wildflower seeds packaged in cans could create instant meadows. Gardeners across the country, sparked by visions of dazzling blooms and meadow grasses carpeting their backyards, bought into the dream. And cans of these promising seed mixes flew off nursery shelves. Then reality hit. Gardeners - especially in the West - didn't find their backyards large enough for meadows. And many of the mixes contained mostly grass seed; the grasses and weeds usually grew faster than the wildflowers. In most cases, the meadows weren't pretty sights. These days, gardeners want seed mixes that provide impressive floral displays through a long season. Seed companies are responding by blending seeds for specific uses - to attract birds and butterflies, for cut flowers, for shade, and for fragrance - and providing for a succession of blooms by combining annuals and perennials.

    Wildflower Gardening
Wildflower Gardening has, in recent years, enjoyed an increase in popularity as gardeners have discovered just how versatile our native plants can be. Wildflowers are not only finding their way into the traditional garden but, are being used increasingly as a replacement for the traditional lawn, all but eliminating mowing. States are turning to wildflowers along highways to reduce maintenance costs. Like all gardening though, wildflowers have their own demands.
Successful wildflower gardening requires careful planning, soil preparation, and seeding. Pick your site carefully, preferably not north facing or one that has a history of heavy weed growth. Make sure that the area receives enough sunlight for the wildflowers you will be using. Usually site preparation will take one to two years using a combination of cultivation and herbicide applications to eliminate existing growth, roots, and weed seeds. Your task will be made easier if you choose a site that does not border areas of aggressive weedy plants. You will also have to allow for the soil type in site selection. For example, many plants hate heavy clay soils while others cannot stand to have their feet wet.
