Wind power
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Wind energy Jump to: navigation search A modern wind turbine in rural scenery. Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage, or sails to propel ships. At the end of 2009, worldwide nameplate capacity of wind-powered generators was 159.2 gigawatts (GW). Energy production was 340 TWh, which is about 2% of worldwide electricity usage; and has doubled in the past three years. Several countries have achieved relatively high levels of wind power penetration (with large governmental subsidies), such as 20% of stationary electricity production in Denmark , 14% in Ireland and Portugal , 11% in Spain , and 8% in Germany in 2009. As of May 2009, 80 countries around the world are using wind power on a commercial basis. Large-scale wind farms are connected to the electric power transmission network; smaller facilities are used to provide electricity to isolated locations. Utility companies increasingly buy back surplus electricity produced by small domestic turbines. Wind energy, as an alternative to

[+] Wind Energy Turbines in Iowa
  • Wind Energy Iowa ranks second nationally in current wind generation output with 3,670 megawatts installed with 2,534 turbines across the state. (AWEA, 2010). Des Moines-based MidAmerican Energy Company is "First in the Nation" among rate-regulated utilities in ownership of wind energy farms with about 833 turbines and 1284.3 megawatts in production. Iowa is a magnet for wind energy manufacturing companies, attracted by Iowa’s strong manufacturing base, excellent transportation infrastructure and skilled workforce. As of April 2010, nine international manufacturing companies have located in Iowa (IDED, 2010). Over the last three years, Iowa leads the nation in attracting wind manufacturers with 200 other companies in the supply chain. The Iowa Power Fund and Iowa Office of Energy Independence– created by the Iowa Legislature in 2007 – provides a $100 million grant resource to promote the goals of Iowa energy independence. (IDED, 2008) The Iowa Power Fund promotes Iowa’s burgeoning wind industry through funding research and development, early commercialization, and innovation that leads to market transformation (Office of Energy Independence, 2008). 1,000 megawatts of energy can power 250,000 homes and is the equivalent to removing the emissions placed in the atmosphere by 682,000 cars in the state of Iowa in a year's time.

Basic information on wind energy and wind power technology, resources, and issues of concern.
Wind Energy and Wind Power
Wind is a form of solar energy . Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the irregularities of the earth's surface, and rotation of the earth. Wind flow patterns are modified by the earth's terrain, bodies of water, and vegetative cover. This wind flow, or motion energy, when "harvested" by modern wind turbines , can be used to generate electricity
How Wind Power Is Generated
The terms " wind energy " or " wind power " describe the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity . Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks (such as grinding grain or pumping water) or a generator can convert this mechanical power into electricity to power homes, businesses, schools, and the like.
