People have harnessed the wind to deliver energy for centuries. Today, wind generates electricity that powers millions of American homes and businesses and is one our nation's fastest-growing sources of energy. Taking advantage of this abundant domestic resource to generate electricity helps meet America's growing energy demands while improving our energy security and protecting our environment. The Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Program is working to improve wind technology and increase the use of wind energy in the U.S. The Wind Program works with partners in the wind industry to develop clean, domestic, innovative wind energy technologies that are cost-competitive with fossil fuels. In addition, the Wind Program collaborates with the electric power industry to integrate wind power into our electricity supply while maintaining the stability and reliability of the electric grid. Finally, the Wind Program works with other federal agencies, states, and communities to reduce barriers to wind power development. These efforts have culminated in some of the industry's leading products today and have contributed to record-breaking growth in the deployment of wind technologies. You can find statistical information on the use of wind energy in the U.S. through the

Currently, the output from 93 large wind-powered turbines in the region is being  integrated into the power supply system for 124 electric cooperatives, including East River's member cooperatives. Electric co-ops are consumer-owned and controlled organizations that supply energy and related services to members at cost, without seeking a profit. With a potential generating capacity of up to 136 megawatts, these wind projects produce enough energy to serve 40,000 homes on an annual average. This effort is reducing our dependence on traditional fossil fuels and helping to keep our environment clean.

    Energy from Moving Air
How Uneven Heating of Water and Land Causes Wind Source: National Energy Education Development Project (Public Domain) Wind is simply air in motion. It is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface by the sun. Because the Earth's surface is made of very different types of land and water, it absorbs the sun's heat at different rates. One example of this uneven heating can be found in the daily wind cycle.
    The Daily Wind Cycle
During the day, the air above the land heats up more quickly than the air over water. The warm air over the land expands and rises, and the heavier, cooler air rushes in to take its place, creating wind. At night, the winds are reversed because the air cools more rapidly over land than over water. In the same way, the atmospheric winds that circle the earth are created because the land near the Earth's equator is heated more by the sun than the land near the North and South Poles.

DIY Solar Cells – What other options do we have? The Solar Cell has been around for about 60 years. Today’s cells are based either on the Mono-crystalline or the Poly-crystalline rigid silicon wafer form. The original solar cell was built by the American inventor Charles Fritts back in 1883. Although the modern cell was developed after the initial patent was registered by Russell Shoemaker Ohl in 1946.  The rigid silicon wafer solar cell continues to be the basic standard building material for most solar panels.  Industry tends to use the higher quality Mono-crystalline cell. Although more recently industry has started to develop the thin...
Solar Power – Don’t Get Wasted!
Slice-n-Dice your Solar Cells? The name Solar ‘CELL’ hints that these things are biological, when in fact rigid Solar Cell wafers are generally mineral. The material used for most rigid Solar Cell wafers that we see, buy and might use for DIY Solar Panel manufacture, is silicon.  Solar Cells aren’t even cells initially, but they are ‘grown’ as many crystals are. To be honest it doesn’t make commercial or common sense to try producing your own! Although with the advent of new technologies that day may be just around the corner. Watch out for dye-sensitised solar cells and luminescent solar concentrators! Beautiful...

Table of Content Introduction Chapter Energy - What Is It? Chapter ... Conclusion
    Chapter 16:
Wind Energy Wind can be used to do work. The kinetic energy of the wind can be changed into other forms of energy, either mechanical energy or electrical energy. When a boat lifts a sail, it is using wind energy to push it through the water. This is one form of work. Farmers have been using wind energy for many years to pump water from wells using windmills like the one on the right. In Holland, windmills have been used for centuries to pump water from low-lying areas. Wind is also used to turn large grinding stones to grind wheat or corn, just like a water wheel is turned by water power. Today, the wind is also used to make electricity. The blades of the turbine are attached to a hub that is mounted on a turning shaft. The shaft goes through a gear transmission box where the turning speed is increased. The transmission is attached to a high speed shaft which turns a generator that makes electricity. If the wind gets too high, the turbine has a brake that will keep the blades from turning too fast and being damaged. You can use a single smaller wind turbine to power a home or a school. The small turbine on the right makes enough energy for a house. In the picture on the left, the children at this Iowa school are playing beneath a wind turbine that makes enough electricity to power their entire school.
