One System, One Library
Now is the time to reinvest in UWS Libraries.  The libraries have employed the concept of One System, One Library to maintain and improve collections and achieve efficient services in an environment of flat or reduced budgets and rapidly increasing costs.  It has been ten years since the libraries have received an increase of state funding.  Additional funding is critical to fully implement the vision of building a more robust One System, One Library that provides world-class library services to students, faculty, staff and Wisconsin residents. Vision:   The University of Wisconsin System (UWS) libraries will advance successful teaching, learning and research through building a robust One System, One Library. Strategic Direction 1:  Integrate Information and Services into Learning Environments.

Going the Extra Mile with a Smile
There is a reference librarian at Madison Central who is extraordinary (and he's up against some mighty tough competition since everybody there is wonderful). I think his name is Jim and I have sort of known him for a long time, too long to ask his name now. Anyhow, I frequently have to select music for a radio show I co-produce and if I have even the smallest inkling about what I want, Jim is always there to help ferret it out. He goes to great, great lengths and is very skillful at using the reference materials to find stuff. It's almost as if each job is his own special mission. I really appreciate it. Jim and all the dedicated public library employees are part of the last bastion of what a civil society looks like in this country. Along with the public schools, there are what a democracy should be. We must defend and protect this valuable public resource. Thanks again. ~ Gay Davidson-Zielske Posted on May 10, 2007 2:31 PM

The Public Library in Eau Claire 1860-2009
By Larry Nix on November 9, 2010 10:46 AM Permalink I just received a complimentary copy of The Public Library In Eau Claire 1860-2009 I would also like to commend the folks at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library for the treatment of their library's history on their website. They use my recommended "two click" approach to website library histories - one click on "About Us" and a second click on "Library History" after reaching the library's home page. The Library History page at L.E. Phillips includes links to the new publication and a variety of other library history resources that have been digitized. I have a previous post about the early public library buildings in Eau Claire.
Awards and Honors Banquet 2010
By Larry Nix on November 7, 2010 10:16 AM Permalink The Wisconsin Library Heritage Center Steering Committee appreciates the opportunity to induct new people into the Wisconsin Library Hall of Fame as part of the Awards and Honors Banquet at the WLA Annual Conference. This year in Wisconsin Dells on November 4 was the third time that the WLHC has inducted multiple individuals into the Hall of Fame during the Awards and Honors Banquet. The Wisconsin Library Association Board and the WLA Awards and Honors Committee have been extremely gracious in allowing the inductions to take place at this important event at the WLA Conference. The Wisconsin Library Hall of Fame is a logical extension of the recognition which is given annually to those who have made an important contribution to the improvement of library services in Wisconsin. Both the Awards and Honors Banquet and the Library Hall of Fame are made possible by the support of the

    Community Advertising Envelopes
By Larry Nix on November 20, 2009 6:41 PM Permalink Comments (0) One way that communities in the first two decades of the 20th century sought to attract new businesses was through advertising on envelopes. These envelopes typically included pictures on the front of the envelope that depicted significant buildings and attractions in the community. The back of these envelopes included written text which made the case for locating in a particular community. During this same period new public library buildings were being built in communities across the country, many as the result of grants from philanthropists such as Andrew Carnegie . So it is not surprising that libraries are often one of the buildings being depicted on the front of the envelope. The envelope above is for the community of Stoughton and it has an image of the building that housed the city hall, the library, and the opera house. This envelope was mailed in September of 1905. In December of 1905 Stoughton received a grant from Andrew Carnegie to build a separate public library building. Both buildings are still in existence in Stoughton and the Carnegie building has been incorporated into an expanded public library. A previous post shows postcards depicting both buildings. A community advertising envelope for Sheboygan can be seen

Librarian still going strong after 52 years Well, actually, the woman who has helped Wisconsin libraries be great for a longer period of time than nearly anyone in the state can name a few changes off the top of her head, including the switch from the Gaylord check out of books to a computerized check out system. Most big adjustments for Henry have been computer-related. Henry can trace her love of libraries back to her youth.
