Wolverine Wildlife Overpass Parks Canada Banff
Building highways through natural habitat always interferes with wildlife. If I gave Parks Canada a roasting elsewhere , I truly complement them on how they handle the welfare of Banff's wildlife population along the Trans Canada Highway in the Banff National Park, the main transport route to the west coast. The Bow Valley is traditionally a high density migrating route for wildlife between the lower and higher areas. Too many fatal accidents occurred before it was finally decided that something had to be done and the first highway overpass was built. The 50-meter wide Wolverine Wildlife Overpass near Banff looks quite simple, but a lot of planning and engineering went into building this structure to keep it as natural as possible and to provide a protected corridor for animals. Two over- and 22 underpasses have been built on this stretch. It was not clear how the animals would react. Luckily, constant monitoring shows that the wildlife adapted well to the new situation.

"Picture a weasel and most of us can do that,
for we have met that little demon of destruction,
that small atom of insensate courage,
that symbol of slaughter,
sleeplessness, and tireless, incredible activity
picture that scrap of demoniac fury,
multiply that mite some fifty times,
and you have the likeness of a Wolverine." Ernest Thompson Seton

The wolverine ( Gulo gulo ) earned its place in North American folklore long before north-country trappers and a few over-zealous naturalists began to spin tales of a beast of great ferocity, cunning, and extraordinary strength. Indian mythology describes the wolverine as a trickster-hero, and a link to the spirit world. Still, even today the wolverine remains largely a mystery. The Wolverine Foundation, Inc. (TWF) was formed in 1996 to promote interest in the wolverine's status and ecological role in the world wildlife community. It is a non-profit foundation comprised of leading wildlife scientists knowledgeable in the life history, ecology, and management of one of the least understood and most fascinating creatures on earth. TWF recognizes the need for a coordinated science-based effort to elevate the wolverine's management status through support and initiation of research, and to develop an information network for professional and public education.

How animals are adapted to live in the Arctic
polar bear - caribou - musk ox - wolf - wolverine
arctic fox - ermine - lemming - arctic hare
arctic ground squirrel - birds - whales - harp seal - walrus ANIMALS living on LAND CARIBOU are members of the deer family. Their thick fur coats have hollow hairs. This helps to keep them warm. They move across the Arctic in large herds. Caribou eat moss, lichens and green plants. For the winter they go to the forests of the south where trees give them protection from the wind and the snow. In the spring the caribou leave the forests and go to the tundra where the calves are born.

THE MUSK OXEN have thick overcoats of shaggy long straight hair that hang down to the ground. Their undercoats are thick brown fleece. Some of the coat is shed in the summer. They huddle together in groups for protection and to keep warm. When wolves attack, the musk oxen form a circle around the calves. The adults face outward and use their sharp horns for defence.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Wolverine ecology in the lower 48 United States is not well documented. Federal and state resource managers need information in order to make well-informed policy decisions that affect land-use practices and populations of wolverines. Wolverines are currently on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service list for consideration as a threatened or endangered species. This determination will be a particularly difficult task. This project is designed to provide needed information and answer specific questions relevant to wolverine management and related land-use policies. A successful conservation strategy for wolverines in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) requires documentation of population demographics and determination of the human and ecosystem influences that affect population dynamics. Two areas, the Madison Range of southwestern Montana and the Teton Range of northwestern Wyoming, have been selected for intensive study. These areas were chosen because they are representative of the land management jurisdictions and human-use impacts that are common to the GYE. Variation in jurisdiction, management policies, and human-use impacts between these two study areas will facilitate our ability to compare and contrast influences on wolverine population dynamics.

First Michigan wolverine spotted in 200 years
Last confirmed sightings were by fur traders in early 1800s

  • ad info Arnie Karr DNR via AP By David Runk The Associated Press updated 2/25/2004 5:15:10 PM ET A biologist has confirmed the sighting of a real Michigan wolverine, about 200 years after the species was last seen in the state that uses the small but ferocious animal as its unofficial nickname. Coyote hunters spotted a wolverine near Ubly, about 90 miles north of Detroit. Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Arnie Karr saw the forest predator Tuesday and snapped pictures of the animal as it ran out of the woods and across a field. The wolverine, a member of the weasel family that grows to about 25 pounds but is ferocious enough to fight off bears and wolves, once ranged across the northern and western United States. It is now limited mostly to northern Canada, Idaho and Alaska, with sightings in a few other states, but its last confirmed sightings in Michigan were by fur traders in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
