N.A.P.A.K Cliff Schoefler Wonderful Wombats
Wombats are without a doubt (in my extremely biased opinion) the most lovable of Australia's many marsupials. They are large enough to substitute for your average family dog and are just as playful - at least while they're young. It must be said however that Wombats don't automatically do well in captivity and only a handful would make a suitable pet.
There are three species of Wombats. The most numerous and widespread is the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus).
The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latrifrons)
The third species is the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) which would have to be considered to be on the brink of extinction. The fossil record indicates that this animal was once widespread in inland Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
Common Wombats
Let me say right from the start (from personal experience) Wombats are smart. They have a large brain and they know how to use it. They are frolicsome and will play with what seems like inexhaustible energy. They are also quite fleet of foot, able to run at around 40 km/hr. They are particularly fast and smart when a packet of chocolate biscuits is about to be put out of reach. (First rule of Wombat keeping - never get between a Wombat and a source of chocolate biscuits. Remember you can't out-run it, you almost certainly can't out-wrestle it, but you

Welcome to the Wombats website
"Wombats" is a Playschool for 3–4 year old children and operates out of the community-based Page Preschool. It is organised by a volunteer parent committee and employs two qualified teachers. Wombats Playschool offers children a stepping-stone to independence from a parent or carer in a supportive and stimulating environment. Wombats Playschool’s main aim is to provide opportunities for the child to enjoy belonging to his or her own social group, to interact cooperatively with peers, and to take responsibility for belongings and equipment At Wombat's Playschool play is the manner in which children exercise their physical, creative and cognitive resources. Play provides opportunities for physical activity, the development of skills for social interaction, flexible use of material, expression of feelings and ideas as well as the spontaneous use of language. Play is the major means by which children explore and come to understand their world.

The Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus)
is widespread and locally common from south east Queensland to Tasmanian. It is declining in Western Victoria and South Australia. Length to 1100mm, weight 20-35Kg, life span 5-15 years in wild (uncertain), longer in captivity.
The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) has a patchy distribution in semi-arid scrubland and mallee from the far south east of WA to the far south west of NSW. Population classified as vulnerable due to poor breeding conditions. Length to 935mm, weight to 32Kg, life span to 12 years in wild (estimated), longer in captivity).
The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat or Yaminon (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is critically endangered, being restricted to about 130 individuals in a 300 ha protected area in Qld. Probably the most endangered of all large mammals. Length to 1100mm, weight to 35Kg, life span as per SHN wombat. Struggling to survive because if invasion of African buffel grass which out-competes the native grasses that this wombat feeds on. Population now considered too small for relocation of enough individuals to start a new colony. Captive breeding attempts have proved largely a failure.

Wombats
September 2002
What do wombats look like?
Wombats are stout, sturdy marsupials. They grow to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kg. They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. Wombats have been known to live for up to 27 years in captivity. Two of the three species of wombat occur in NSW:
  • The common wombat , most widespread of the two, has a large, naked snout covered in grainy skin. The much rarer southern hairy-nosed wombat has larger ears than the common wombat, and its snout is coated with fine hairs.

The northern hairy-nosed wombat is presumed extinct in NSW.
Where do they live?
The common wombat lives mainly in wet, partly forested areas on the coast, and on the ranges and western slopes. The southern hairy-nosed wombat prefers dry, open country. Southern hairy-nosed wombats are very rare, and until recently were thought to be extinct in NSW. They are currently listed as endangered.

Wombats
Wombats are large, nocturnal, herbivorous, burrowing marsupials that are native to the continent of Australia. Print Email Both male and female wombats are solidly built with squat, round, bear like bodies with a large strong skull and a short stumpy tail. They have small eyes and ears, but a large nose which, depending upon the type of wombat species, may be hairless or covered in hair. (The nose of the common wombat does not have hair). Wombats have short legs, large paws with five toes ending in strong blade-like claws. The hind paws of the wombat contain four claws with the fifth toe looking like a small clawless thumb. In this story we meet two brothers who are caring for some wombats before they are released back into the wild.

Welcome to the
World Wide Wombat Web!
Wombats are cute furry creatures from Australia. There are not nearly enough web pages about them, and this page seeks to help fill this obvious shortfall. Wombats belong to the marsupial order of species from Australia. The other marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, wallaby, bandicoot, bilby, nabarlek, quokka, quoll, tasmanian devil, tasmanian tiger and ringtail possum. There is also one species of marsupial found in North America, the Opossum. For information about the the three species of the wombat family and details of their lifestyle and life cycle, see the alt.animals.wombat Frequently Asked Questions list. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is a severely endangered species and the other types are at risk too. Wombats are really much nicer creatures than koalas (too irritable when not drugged up on eucalyptus) and kangaroos (too stupid, and too tiring to watch). Why isn't anyone doing more to save the wombat?

Wombats are marsupials from Australia. They resemble small bears in appearance, with a thick and heavy body. They can be buff, grey, dark brown or black. They are shy, timid and hide from site in the wild. They do well in captivity and often become interesting and affectionate pets. If annoyed, they may emit a hissing growl. They may live up to 26 years or more. Wombats live in burrows and are rapid, powerful diggers. They may construct a burrow longer that 30m. At the end of the burrow they make a grass or bark nest. They may come out to bathe in the sun. They eat mainly grasses, roots, bark and fungi. There are three different types of species: the coarse-haired, the hairy-nosed and the soft-furred wombat. They are for the most part solitary but they may have smallish social groups consisting of 5-10 wombats in the nearby area. The numbers of wombats in the wild are very low and some species are endangered. This is due to the land use practices of people who have destroyed the wombat's habitat by cattle farming or trying to exterminating rabbits. wombat wombat

Click images to enlarge One Of Our Wombats Is Missing Zenobi Jan 1991 YS61 UNR Mike Gerrard I know what you're thinking: how does Mike manage to review his own game without giving it at least twelve out of ten in every category? Well it's something I've been worrying about too! I obviously couldn't do it myself, and even if I asked someone else to do it, then it wouldn't be easy for them, knowing I'd be reading the review before it was printed. So bugger it, I thought, when a hairy little Balrog offered to do the review for me - I've got to print something. I've not let him give it any marks (in case the suspicious amongst you should suspect him of bias) but other than that, over to you, hairy little Balrog...
With his feet firmly planted on the kitchen table and a steaming mug of coffee in his hand, Balrog was attempting to remove a large wad of bluish-grey fluff from the depths of his belly-button with the aid of the bread-knife. The rattle of the letter-box shattered the early morning silence, startling the Balrog, causing him to swing the knife downwards. Luckily for him it caught the safety-pin that was holding his flies together and glanced off to one side.
"Whoops," he cried, "that was a close escape. Mrs Balrog would never have forgiven me if I'd spilt blood on the carpet."

The wombat is widely recognized as one of the most dangerous animals in existence. The wombat is so enormously aggressive, vicious and brutal while at the same time extremely intelligent that very little is known about it - since without exception all attempts to portrait, trace, catalogue or otherwise research it turned out fatal for the exploring zoologist teams as well as for whoever incidentally encountered one as with today. (They are also used for playing Wom, a well known game in souther north Kawajabab) Recently the origins of this word have been traced to Southern Australia where there had a lot of shrimps on the barbie, in the bark of a disused opal mining tree, evidence of the first use of diesel-powered dildos was discovered in hieroglyphic form. It is believed that this device was used in aborigional lesbian tribal rituals to which Australian men were not invited. To this day, many OZ men have no idea what a vagina is for, and can be heard muttering "No wonder you're bleeding, they cut your cock off!" when they are turned down by women in the traditional Australian mating fight because it's "...that time of month."
