Introduction
I am currently working on my own fact filled wombat page. I haven't finished it yet but I'm putting out what I have. Expect more information and some rearranging. To compensate for what I am currently missing at the bottom of this page I have some links for you to follow. These links are to web pages with wombat facts and wombat fun. I also have links to wombat pictures. I have not checked each link yet. My wombat picture is currently missing. I am going to try to get permission to use it.
Brief Description
Wombats are thick-bodied animals that have short, powerful legs with strong claws used for burrowing. They range in length from 70 to 120 cm (27-47 in) and weigh up to 35 kg (77 lb). Their heads are relatively large but they have very small tails and small eyes and short ears. Wombats are grayish brown. The common wombat is coarse haired with a naked nose and rounded ears. The two species of hairy-nosed wombats have soft fur and a hairy muzzle and pointed ears that are slightly longer than those of the common wombat. The wombat, like many famous Australian animals is a marsupial. The female has a pouch but, unlike a kangaroo, this pouch opens rearward. This helps prevent dirt from entering the pouch as the wombat digs.

WOMBAT
The wombat lives in hilly forest country and it likes to burrow underground. A burrow can be as long as 20 metres. Wombats quickly dig complicated tunnels with their strong legs and sharp claws, and then they push loosened soil away with their hind feet. Did you know that a wombat likes to live alone? Wombats live alone in their burrows, but other wombats may be in a tunnel close by, or sometimes burrows can interconnect. Wombats are very shy animals. They usually rest in or near their burrows during the day and come out at night to eat. Farmers consider wombats pests because they damage crops and fences, and cattle may break their legs by stepping in wombat burrows. The burrows also provide shelter for rabbits which also damage crops. For these reasons, farmers are often eager to rid their farms of all wombats. The hairy-nosed wombat lives in dry, grassy regions of Australia. This kind of wombat uses its burrow to control its temperature. By staying in its burrow during the day, the wombat keeps cool and conserves water in the summer, and stays warm in the winter. back

Wombats My fascination and endearment towards wombats goes back to 1996 when I was
introduced to them firstly in an article written by someone who reared a baby wombat
( sadly I have since lost the article) and then seeing them in real life in Sydney
and Brisbane, Australia. They are nocturnal and so I have seen mostly sleepy
wombats. I would love to foster a baby wombat one day. However they like to burrow underground. Therefore it is really an unrealistic wish of mine to have one as a pet. Wombats are marsupial mammals native to Eastern Australia and
Tasmania. They can weigh up to 39 kg and can grow approximately to 1 meter.
They have a short 25mm tail and stumpy legs.
Wombats live in hilly forest country and like to burrow underground.
They can burrow for as long as 20 metres. Australia has three species of wombat The common wombat - found in forested habitats and grazes
in forest clearings of Tasmania, NSW and Victoria. The Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat - found in South Australia and Western Australia.

Wombats Three common wombats live the good life at the Australia Zoo: Dozer and Minibus Chisel , a very naughty male. Common wombats live in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. They prefer heath, coastal scrub and open forest habitats, where the soil tends to be loose and easy to dig. Wombats love to burrow. They are, in fact, the world's largest burrowing mammals. With broad, flattened heads, compact bodies, short, powerful limbs and wide, large-clawed feet, digging is a cinch for the common wombat. A single wombat will establish several burrows, called warrens, in its home range. These are typically built on grassy banks above creeks or gullies, where they have easy access to native grasses and drinking water. Large wombat warrens can include numerous underground branches, several sleeping chambers, and multiple entrances and exits, extending a total length of up to 650 feet. Wombats also build many small warrens, which are usually less than 7 feet in length, to be used as quick escape routes when predators are afoot. They are solitary creatures, known for their intolerance of others. Wombats frequently chase intruders from their burrows and home areas. Curiously though, they have also been observed visiting each other's burrows in apparent peace.

Wombats Wombats live in Australia. Babies live in their mother's pouch for 6 months. Wombats dig dens with tunnels. They eat plants at night. They stay in a den in daytime. The wombat is a marsupial that digs burrows. It is about 1 metre long from nose to tail, the tail being only a couple of centimetres long. An adult weighs about 25-35 kilograms. Wombats are the largest burrowing mammals. There are three different kinds (species) of wombat. A wombat is covered with coarse grey or brown fur, with a large head, a large nose and small ears. It is solidly built, with large claws for digging. Its body has a rounded appearance. Its back is hard and bony. This bony back is a useful defence against intruders in the burrow, as the wombat uses its back to crush them against the burrow wall. The wombat is nocturnal, which means it is active at night, eating grasses, roots and shrubs. It stays in a burrow in daytime, though sometimes can be seen basking in the sun at the burrow entrance. It lives alone, except for a female with young. Some wombat burrows can be about 20 metres long, with several entrances and chambers. A wombat generally has a number of burrows in its territory, and may visit several during its nightly wanderings. The wombat marks its territory by leaving droppings (scats) on logs and rocks.
