Here's my story... good 'day, you see I am still Australian at heart despite my peripatetic lifestyle (that kind of means I spend my life travelling and teaching my ways). I am, as far as I know the world's most travelled wombat, well me and my wife. Both me and Mrs. Wombat - not pictured (she's the one taking the photos, that's why they are all so bad!) have been cruising the globe for many years now, leaving our home in the Blue Mountains near Sydney for a life on the road. We're the animal kingdoms closest equivalent to Michael Palin!
We once considered ourselves the world's only travelling wombats, but since creating this site we have (I kid you not) had e-mails and photos from at least five other globetrotting wombat . Nevertheless, we are in no doubt and safe in the knowledge that, we are the original mass moving marsupials.
Since my first stop in China I have managed to set paws on every continent(Antarctica aside), but still have many places to see. Nowadays I am still on the road looking for more and more famous photo opportunities - you can see some of the places I managed to get my furry face in front of below, but you will have to look hard in most cases. A kind of where's wombat competition!
In case you are a little confused, wombats are native Australian marsupials. Marsupial is Greek for 'little purse', since a marsupial is a mammal in which the female has a pouch where she carries her young for a considerable time after birth. Just like in my good friends the Kangaroos. We live (when not travelling) in burrows usually dug in the side of gullies and would you believe can run up to 40km per hour.

63. The Faunal Emblem Of South Australia
Facts about the hairy nosed wombat, a thick-set powerful marsupial indigenous to Australia.
http://www.premcab.sa.gov.au/emblems/wombat1.htm
Hairy-Nosed Wombat
The Hairy-Nosed or Plains Wombat ( Lasiorhinus latifrons ) was adopted by the Government as the faunal emblem of South Australia on 27 August 1970. It is a marsupial mammal indigenous to Australia and totally protected in South Australia. The generic name, Lasiorhinus , means hairy-nosed and the specific name, latifrons , means broad-fronted. The Hairy-Nosed Wombat is a thick-set powerful mammal with a broad blunt head, small pointed ears, short muscular legs, strongly clawed feet and a rudimentary tail. It has soft grey-brown silky fur. Adults are up to 30 cm high, 75 to 95 cm long, and weigh between 18 and 32 kilos. The animal is adapted to life in semi-arid and arid zones and, apart from some small colonies in the south-east of Western Australia, is confined to South Australia. It is most abundant on Eyre Peninsula, the Gawler Ranges and the Nullarbor Plain. Smaller colonies occur on the west bank of the Murray River and on Yorke Peninsula. The Hairy-Nosed Wombat is essentially a plains dweller inhabiting many combinations of soils and vegetation, especially open woodlands and shrublands. It is a very powerful digger - only deterred by soft sand and unbroken sheet limestone - and excavates deep cool, humid burrows which are essential for survival in its hot, waterless environment. The wombat feeds exclusively on plant material which often is its only source of water.

The Wombat Foundation The Wombat Foundation is a charitable organisation set up to support activities that aim to bring the northern hairy-nosed wombat back from the brink of extinction. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is one of the world's most endangered species. At last count there were only 115 individuals living in a single isolated population in Western Queensland, Australia. Problem
Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats were extinct at Deniliquin and St George by the late 1800s. Today there are around 138 left at Epping Forest National Park near Clermont. The variety of native grasses they feed on has been reduced by Buffel Grass infestations. The greatest threat to the northern hairy-nosed wombat's survival is the low number of wombats and the fact that all occur in one population.
            Background Information
There are about 138 Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats left alive. This animal is Queensland's most endangered mammal. Once found south to the Victorian border, the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is now found in only one place - Epping Forest National Park (Scientific) in central Queensland. Of its 3,160 hectares approximately 750 ha is suitable for habitat as some of the park's soils are heavy clays, which aren't suitable for burrows.

The head is compactly built and is used in constructing tunnels. The limbs are especially powerfully, with short broad feet and strong, flat claws (except on the hallux , which is vestigial). Posture is plantigrade . Wombats are burrowers, building impressive burrow systems with many burrows. Some burrows exceed 20 m in length. Wombats have a remarkably rodent-like skull . They have a single pair of incisors . These teeth are heavily built and rodent-like in form. Also like the incisors of rodents, the incisors of wombats have
