Senate Votes on Paycheck Fairness Act Tomorrow
Tuesday November 16, 2010 The Senate will vote tomorrow, November 17, 2010 on the Paycheck Fairness Act. Many senators have yet to decide which way to vote, or are simply not making their positions public. The Paycheck Fairness act has passed the House, but to become law, it must also be passed by the Senate. Women are now the primary earners in four out of every ten households in the United States. Women who work full-time still earn on average 23 cents less per hour than men performing the same jobs. Minority women earn even less. According to MomsRising.org, ..."the wage gap for women of color in 2009 was even more staggering than for women overall. When Black and Hispanic women work full-time, year round, they only make 62 and 53 cents, respectively, for every dollar their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts earn. Further, a recent study found that with equal resumes and job experiences, mothers were offered $11,000 lower starting salaries than non-mothers (fathers, on the other hand, were offered $6,000 more in starting salaries than non-fathers). Since over 80% of women in our nation have children by the time they're 44 years old, the majority of women in our nation are touched by this type of wage discrimination at some point in their lives."

The Women in Business Steering Committee meets monthly to plan topics, speakers, and structure to organize first class event that attract a diversified group of women. Each program draws 100-400 attendees. Our committee, appointed by the Chamber President, meets on the second Wednesday of every month. To plan and host successful events, the steering committee begins by electing a Sub-Committee Chair from our Steering Committee. The Sub Committee Chair creates a committee (open to any chamber member) of volunteers who are interested in getting involved in our mission and would like to make a contribution. When you participate on this level you are opening doors to build relationships with other chamber members which can ultimately help your business grow. Activities and Highlights:
