Welcome to the Minerva Center
The MINERVA Center, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)3 educational foundation. Since 1983 it has provided information and inspiration to military women and women veterans and supported scholars, journalists, filmmakers, public policy activists and others engaged in the study of women and war. It is non-partisan and does not engage in advocacy although it provides information to all individuals and groups who contact us. The AMAZONS
I s there more behind these famous warrior women than mere Fantasy ?
Join in a virtual archaeological expedition to fathom this mysterious myth! Aim and Objective Characteristics of the Amazons in ancient literature
How did the ancient Greeks see the Amazons?

There is a lot of literature concerning the Amazons and there are numerous pictures of Amazons in Greek art, mostly vase-painting and sculpture.
Earliest Amazon picture
Amazon picture of the week Amazons at the river Thermodon in northern Turkey
It has always been very clear to the ancient Greeks, where these famous Amazons once really had lived. Their home had been at the mouth of the river Thermodon in Northern Turkey. This localization is so definite that even now the river bears a Turkish name which leaves no doubt about its identity. Today the river is called Amazons of Lemnos
In ancient tradition the island Lemnos (also Limnos) was much connected with the Amazons. The ancients called this island On the trail of the Lemnian Amazons

48. Women In History
Women in History This week you will be including research with your writing. The month of March has been designated as Women in History month.
http://www.teachersdesk.org/topics/women_history.html
Women in History
This week you will be including research with your writing. The month of March has been designated as "Women in History" month. Significant contributions to humankind by women are remembered. For example:
  • Florence Nightingale for establishing the first nursing program
  • Clara Barton for founding the Red Cross
  • Harriet Tubman for her work abolishing slavery with the Underground Railroad
  • Marie Curie for her work in chemistry, particulary with radioactive materials
  • Rosa Parks for initiating the Alabama bus boycott, thus the beginning of civil rights for African-Americans
Your first task is to select a "famous" woman. There are many more than just those listed above. Notice, too, I have placed the word famous in quotation marks. You may know of a "famous" woman that others do not. Next research your chosen woman. Find out as much information as you can. This will make your writing assignment that much easier. Look for information in encyclopedias, trade books, publications, and on the Internet. You will be writing two paragraphs this week. Your first paragraph will be a biographical sketch of your "famous" woman. Include pertinent information. Don't waste time reporting trivial details. Remember, too, to not plagiarize. Your main task with this paragraph is to give your reader background material about your selected woman.

Mary Dyer
Born in England, William and Mary Dyer (c.1611 - 1660), emigrated to Boston in 1635. They became followers of Anne Hutchinson and were drawn into the "antinomian" heresy. Expelled from the Massachuestts Bay Colony by the Puritan elders , the Hutchinson group became the 'first planters' in Rhode Island and had initial contact with the local Narragansett Indians.
When visiting London to secure their land grant charter with Parliament in 1650, Mary became a Quaker. Upon her return to Massachusetts, she was twice expelled; on the third time, she was hanged on Boston Common for being a Quaker. Historians credit her death with establishing the basis for religious freedom subsequently granted in our Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. A statue of her stands in front of the State House in Boston.

Children's Encyclopedia of Women This encyclopedia was begun in March 1998 by third and fourth grade students at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, NY. We have added to it during March and April of each year since then. We are currently in the process of adding to the collection with this student work. The children choose a woman based on a topic they are interested in. This is by no means a complete collection. We hope you enjoy your visit and come back soon to see our new addition! updated Visit our timeline

Tells the stories of women who have willingly responded to their country s call in war and peace. From the U.S. Department of Defense.
http://www.defense.gov/specials/womenhist2002/
From the days of the American Revolution to the conflict in the Persian Gulf and today, throughout the World, American women have and are honorably serving in defense of our Nation. In times of war and peace, women have willingly responded to their country's call. Their contributions are characterized by individual and collective acts of self-sacrifice, patriotism, dedication and personal heroism. Yet, how many of us are familiar with their contributions, adversities and struggles? How many of us are aware that women were present on the battlefields of the Great War, in the mud at Anzio and at the fall of Bataan? Full Story.

100 Important Women in History
Welcome to the website of the 100 Most Important Women of All Time: a page of 100 women who history would not be the same without. I, Shelby Ellery, created this site as a gold award project, the highest award that can be awarded in Girl Scouting that has to take at least 50 hours to complete. I chose this project because I believe that women aren't recognized enough. I can name so many men that I have been taught by my teachers, but I really can't name all that many women. This site is a resource for all those people out there who are just like me, no matter what age, curious about how women also affected who people are today and who the world wouldn't be the same without. Take a moment to choose someone you have never heard of and look through this window into their soul, who they really were or are. By all means, help yourself. And thanks again! Jane Addams
