Sen. Barbara Boxer has won her re-election fight in California. Congress has no bigger champion for women and families than Sen. Boxer. She took on self-proclaimed 'Mama Grizzly,' Carly Fiorina, who ran with the backing of Sarah Palin and had a huge infusion of her own money. With Boxer in the Senate, we know that we'll continue to have a true advocate for progressive values and reproductive rights.

Our Mission: Elect Young Women Leaders
Women Under Forty Political Action Committee — WUFPAC — is the nation’s only non-partisan organization that identifies, encourages, and supports women 40 years of age and under running for local, state and federal office. Why 40?
Women aged 40 and younger are nearly absent from elected office and we need their voices to help shape policy and lead our country. Their perspectives as working professionals, mothers, caretakers and community activists are critical to the political conversation. We want young women to have a stronger voice influencing the political process.

As a child, who did you dream of becoming? A scientist who would find the cure for cancer? A teacher who would mold young lives? A fireman who would rescue people from burning buildings? I dreamed of becoming a politician who would build a better future for our children.  Growing up, most kids had posters of rock stars on their walls; on the other hand my walls were filled with the photographs of political world leaders that I had cut out of newspapers. Back then, very few of those leaders were women – in 2009 this is still the case.  To follow my dream, I studied political science and became involved in politics, working as a campaign manager, a grassroots director, a fundraiser and a lobbyist. After gaining much experience, I returned to my native country of Turkey to run for office. I was selected by my political party to run as a vice president. At the age of 29, I was the youngest person ever elected for this position in the history of Turkish politics.  I have met many women around the world asked me about the information how to run for office. Then I decided to

Women in Politics
Women in Costa Rica, despite the always present machismo thing, have made great strides in the political machinery of Costa Rica. This was accomplished through a series of laws passed to make sure women were represented in office. Surprisingly, it worked! Here is a release from Rice University providing a summary of a study done by Mark P Jones, associate professor of political science at Rice University.
How to elect more women? Look to Costa Rica
In 2002, the percentage of women municipal legislators in Costa Rica was unmatched by any other democratically elected national legislature in the world. A recent study examines how this Latin American country achieved such an enviable record.
Like the United States, Costa Rica is a presidential democracy whose power is distributed among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Jones chose to analyze its 81 municipal legislatures, whose candidates are elected from closed-party lists.
“Very often, women who were selected to be on these lists were placed at the bottom of the list in positions from which they had no hope of being elected,” explains Jones. “It took over 12 years of constant effort by a strong quota advocacy movement, but their persistence paid off.”

Blair babes 'have failed' women in politics
By George Jones, Political Editor 12:00AM BST 22 Jul 2000 BLAIR'S babes, the record number of Labour women MPs elected in 1997 , have put back the cause of women in politics by concentrating on their own working conditions since entering Parliament, says Gillian Shephard, the former Tory minister. In a book about her experiences in politics, Shephard's Watch, to be published next week, she shows her deep disillusionment over the arrival in Parliament of 121 women - 101 of them Labour. She had "high hopes" that they would transform Parliament and make a big difference to government. But the new women were "whipped into line" and became mostly compliant, hopeful of preferment. Mrs Shephard said yesterday: "Few rebelled, even, when the issues were of obvious relevance to women and families." Her most serious charge was that, by concentrating on their working conditions, they may have deterred other aspiring women from becoming politicians. Related Articles In the book, she singles out Tess Kingham (Lab, Gloucester), who

    WELCOME
Hello and welcome to the OxWip website, back with a brand new look! We are a friendly Oxford University organisation with the aim of helping and supporting ambitious young women who want to enter politics, or any other male-dominated institution in both the public and the private sector. We do this through organising and promoting exciting events with prominent female leaders and potential employers, by hosting social events to help our members build up a healthy network and by arranging workshops to develop the skills and talents necessary for success.
OxWip has three main aims: to connect Oxford's women students, faculty, and alumni engaged in the political and corporate spheres; to develop the professional and leadership skills necessary for a successful career; and to inspire the next generation of women students.
    STAY CONNECTED
