Although workplace violence is receiving increased attention in the media, the incidents that make the news are only the tip of the iceberg.
    • According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), some 1.7 million American workers are victims of violent victimizations. Workplace violence accounted for 18 percent of all violent crime between 1993 and 1999. In 2000, 13,935 women had injuries or illnesses involving days away from work that resulted from assaults and violent acts (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS]).
Homicide is the second-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries for women, after traffic accidents. Thirty-one percent of women who die at work are killed as a result of an assault or violent act. In 2003, 119 women died as a result of an assault or violent act in the workplace (BLS).
12.7 percent of all female violent crimes were committed while the victim was working or on duty. These acts of nonfatal violence include rape and sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault and simple assault (BLS).

History
Throughout most of history, women were viewed as having two responsibilities their whole life. Even today, being a good wife and mother are what society expects of women.
During World War II, there was a tremendous rise of women workers, especially in blue-collar positions. The war gave women the opportunity to work while the men were fighting the war. Although women were working the same jobs as men, they were not getting paid the same wages.
During that time, some women had more than one job to maintain their families while maintaining their household duties. When the war was over, women were forced to leave their jobs because the men had come back to reclaim their old jobs.
Women in the workplace today
Though women have come a long way with their rights, they are still discriminated against.
Women in the military
Though the percentage of women in the U.S. military has increased dramatically since 1980, which is when they were first allowed to serve, women are less likely to go into combat.

Women in the Workplace
Although a dramatic increase in the number of women participating in the labor force
has taken place in the past decade, women have played a secondary role in that work
force since the ancient civilization of man. The value of women was and still is viewed as
less than that of a man. Traditionally a women's role in society was that of raising
children and handling the duties of the household but now most women want and desire
careers and their own place in this world. They want to stand on their own two feet

CU report: Inequality among women in the workplace is widening
By Darryl Geddes Women have made "substantial progress" in gender equality over the past 25 years, increasing their presence in the labor market and narrowing the wage gap with men. But a new study by a Cornell labor economist also provides dramatic evidence that the economic status of less-educated women is deteriorating. "Less-educated women, especially high school dropouts, have seen their wages fall and their level of participation in the labor market rise at a much slower pace than their more highly educated counterparts. These trends are especially disturbing when one notes that more and more of these women have become the single head of the household," said study author Francine D. Blau, the Frances Perkins Professor in Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. "These women are becoming less able to support a family while at the same time more responsible for the family's well-being." Blau's study found that as many as 38 percent of female high school dropouts with children are now raising them on their own.

LABOR UNIONS

"We are starving while we work; we might as well starve while we strike!" 1909 Garment Workers' Strike Banner
When Alexander Hamilton wrote his Report on Manufacturers in 1791, seeking ways to develop industry in the United States, he identified women and children as a source of cheap labor. Later, in the 1820s, the textile mills of New England, most notably those in Lowell, Massachusetts, hired young women from the surrounding farms as workers, viewing them as more tractable than men and more willing to earn less, since presumably they would stop working once they married.
To make matters worse for female laborers, workingmen often saw them as threats to their status, especially as new machines permitted less skilled operatives to perform tasks formerly assigned to craftsmen. Thus, it is not surprising that as men attempted to unionize in order to combat declining pay and status, their leaders often ignored female workers.
