Woodcarving
In a great variety of subjects and sizes, the painted wood figures are carved from copal wood using the natural shape to inspire the sculptural form. If representing snakes or animals with tails, for instance, the tail takes the winding form of the tree branch. Copal wood is easy to carve while green. An uncomplicated piece such as an armadillo 10 inches long, takes about three days to carve. After drying in the sun for another three days it becomes light weight and hard. A sealer is applied to protect it from insects. Men do the carving, and the women paint, everybody working up to 15 hour days. The prosperity of many of the artisans is an amazing turnaround in villages where 15 years ago many were wondering how to make a living.
The artistic quality of the work is improving all the time, with constant copying between carvers of popular themes. The competition is stimulating, and the some of the best work is on a level approaching fine art. (LA MANO MAGICA gallery purposely promotes the liaison between the folk art and paintings.) At the moment the most popular subject matter includes armadillos, dogs and cats, snakes, iguanas, frogs, devils, angels, and pigs.
Folk art has that characteristic: it's appeal and addiction are immediate. Most of the work from Oaxaca is now created on special order and while some families have become very commercial, turning out hundreds of the same pieces, others refuse to do so many of the same thing simply because they get bored and are in a financial position to pick their buyers. The latter are often the superior artists.

Wood carving
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Carved wooden cranes Wood carving (xyloglyphy) is a form of working wood by means of a cutting tool held in the hand, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine , or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. The phrase may also refer to the finished product, from individual sculptures , to hand-worked mouldings composing part of a tracery Some of the finest extant examples of early wood carving are from the Middle Ages in Italy and France , where the typical themes of that era were Christian iconography . In England many complete examples remain from the 16th and 17th century, where oak was the preferred medium in this case Figural carving seems to have been widespread. The carving to represent one's god in a tangible form finds expression in numberless ways. The early carver, and, for that matter, the native of the present day, has found a difficulty in giving expression to the eye, and at times has evaded it by inlaying this feature with colored material.

  • If you do not know if there is a wood carving supply store in your area, I would suggest that you first set up a support system . By that I mean find  someone to assist you in locating wood and tools when the time comes that you need them.  Regardless of your age, contact the local Senior Center, Jr. College, Community College, or College to see if they have wood carving classes. Get the name and phone number of their instructor. Talk with this person about where to get carving wood and supplies and also about lessons should you decide at some point to join a class. Back The following Back   You do Back Almost all  wood carvers use patterns.  Transfer your pattern onto the wood with graphite paper. With graphite instead of  carbon paper you can erase your lines with a regular eraser without making smudges.  You  want to keep your wood clean, free of smudges, and  free of lotion or food stains.  (If I may add a bit of humor(?) keep your wood free of blood stains). Start with a very simple patternwhat we call a stylized patternso it is easy to work with . You want to have fun while you are learning.  You can get the feel of the wood grain and how to work with it.  You can make your patterns from anything you like.  Some very good beginning patterns come from a small child's coloring book.  Copiers make it very easy to make a pattern the size you want.

Norwegian Woodcarving
Stan Fillingsness looks over a Norwegian woodcarving pattern book. Almost twenty years ago, Stan Fillingsness of Canton met Arnold Bortnem of Sioux Falls when he took a woodcarving class Arne was teaching. Now their roles have been reversed as Stan took Arne on as his apprentice in Norwegian woodcarving techniques. Arne was already an accomplished carver, and because of his own Norwegian heritage had always been fascinated by the traditional acanthus leaf style of that tradition, but couldn’t figure out on his own how to learn its intricacies. Stan had taken classes with master carvers from Norway, had traveled to Norway, and had a large collection of books and carving patterns, so he was the perfect teacher for Arne. And for Stan, Arne was the perfect student: “He was number one on my list of names. I knew he could do it, and I also know that he will pass it on to some other people.” Arne Bortnem carves a Norwegian acanthus leaf clock.
