Organizer and Activist Resources: Working with Volunteers
All Earth Day events should be structured as a way for volunteers to participate. On some projects volunteers do everything including planning, logistics, execution and follow-up. The following are guidelines can assist in finding and keeping volunteers.
    Finding Volunteers
Seek volunteers from your local Jaycees, scout troops, environmental groups, high schools, colleges and adult development centers. Advertise for volunteer support in club and agency newsletters. Send out public service announcements to local papers, stating your needs and advertising your meetings. Look beyond existing sources for volunteers. Earth Day is an ideal opportunity for interested, committed citizens who have never volunteered before. To aid recruiting and tracking, you may want to design a volunteer information form. The form should have spaces for name, address, day and evening phone numbers and jobs people want to do or special skills they have (see sample that follows). This way, you can develop a working "database" of volunteers and match tasks to people's skills.
    Public Volunteer Meetings
Public meetings are an excellent way to recruit volunteers. Frequently, it is possible to obtain meeting spaces free of charge at city or county facilities, private companies, public libraries or private homes.

    Working with volunteers
Top 10 tips for maintaining productivity
You may be part of a community group, on a local board, or even be working with volunteers directly or indirectly in your own organisation. Working on both sides of the volunteer line over the years has given me some insight into how to look after your volunteers, as well as getting great productivity out of them. 1. Capacity What can and can't a volunteer do? Let's keep in mind that smaller, regional groups are often one hundred per cent volunteer run. The Board are all volunteers, so is the General Manager, the promotions person, the office staff etc. Keep this in mind when deciding what tasks a volunteer can and can't do. Because in smaller organisations volunteers do it all! 2. Burn Out Some organisations, tend to overuse and eventually burn out their best volunteers. For example, a local group sees Toby who is great with kids and is asked to help with the kids program. Then the local group finds out Toby plays guitar so they ask him to help in the youth band, (with 2 practices a week), then they are so impressed they ask Toby to lead a weekly counselling group. On the odd weekend that Toby isn't playing in the band, they ask him to help with busy bees and other weekend activities. Then they also want Toby to go to a volunteers conference, and weekend retreat for their volunteers, and a couple of trips into the city. By this stage Toby is feeling quite overwhelmed and under-appreciated. The local group asks Toby and his wife to attend a marriage enrichment weekend - but unfortunately by this stage Toby has already burnt out and has suffered a nervous breakdown, is on anti-depressants and his wife has left him!

Officials are warning of the possibility of a major cholera outbreak throughout the capital of Port-au-Prince where several cases have been confirmed, and 1.3 million earthquake survivors continue to live in squalid, highly-dense camps. "The worst case would be that we have hundreds of thousands of people getting sick at the same time," said Claude Surena, president of the Haiti Medical Association. PCI is working closely with the Ministry of Health; has distributed water purification supplies, emergency supplies for affected children, and antibiotics to affected areas of Artibonite; and is now mobilizing resources and equipping communities with critical messages on health, hygiene, water and sanitation to prevent the spread of cholera throughout Port-au-Prince.

Two people have been arrested for looting $3,700 worth of watches from a jewellery shop in the shopping arcade beneath the World Trade Center, police in New York said. The pair, a former New York corrections office, posing as a police officer, and his friend, were arrested last week on charges of burglary, grand larceny and criminal impersonation, a police official said.

Police spokesman They had been working as volunteers in the disaster area when they allegedly took the watches. New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said that no other shops have reported looting, but he did say that some of the rescue workers at ground zero had themselves fallen victim to theft. The shopping complex is situated below the Trade Center, at the foot of an escalator rescuers used to search for survivors in the corridors beneath the debris.

    managing young talents
Most anti-discrimination initiatives start as volunteer initiatives. When they start, there is no volunteer management, because who would manage who? The organisation is small, and everyone pulls together for the same goal. As the organisation grows, goals tend to shift and people take part for different reasons. After a while the organisation reaches a point where everyone has to stop taking action and take some time to figure out how to go on. That is the exact point at which volunteer management should be figured out as well. You need to think about:
Volunteer management is about thinking ahead. You need to figure out what to do before you have twenty enthusiastic new volunteers at your doorstep. This leaflet aims at helping you figure it out.
