Still less welcome is he who would make a Roman holiday of our misfortunes. About the World War I History Commission Questionnaires Collection
The Commission also conducted a survey of World War I veterans in Virginia through the use of a printed questionnaire. Local branches tried a variety of methods and techniques to get soldiers to complete the questionnaire with mixed results. In Stafford County, local churches were asked to get members of their congregations to complete the questionnaire, but had little success. The city of Richmond branch enlisted the police department in its quest for completed questionnaires. In Shenandoah County, where the local branch had great success, high school boys and girls were offered prizes for the greatest number of questionnaires turned in. Many soldiers refused to submit a completed questionnaire, fearing that doing so would subject them to future military service.
The World War I History Commission Questionnaires Database is a fully searchable database of more than 14,900 records, one for each questionnaire respondent, accessible by name, city/county, and race. Each record is also linked to digitized images of each page of the questionnaires, as well as any accompanying material such as photographs and additional pages submitted by the respondents.

World War I History
Discover the history of the World War I- how the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off the political mayhem known as the 'July crisis'.
When looking at the origins of the First World War, many different theories suggesting causes over long periods of time have been suggested. This, however, is a look at the political decisions made by countries during the July crisis of 1914 and how those decisions sparked the biggest and most terrible war in the history of mankind.
On the 28th June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria, was assassinated in Sarajevo by a group of Serbian and Croat Nationalists. Few would have thought that the killing of one man could lead to the First World War.
The government of Austria-Hungary was obviously upset at the killing. More importantly, they saw the assassination as an endangerment to the Austria-Hungary state. They suspected that the Serbian government had been involved, and that they were encouraging Nationalist movements, making the Austria-Hungary state less stable. A discussion took place concerning an appropriate response from the Austria-Hungary governments, to the Serb government. They realised this might ultimately involve a military attack, but were worried that the Russians might intervene on the side of the Serbs. They believed that if they could gain the support of the Germans before such an attack, the Russians would not be so keen on joining in. A response to a letter to the Kaiser soon confirmed that they had the support of the Germans.

This section of the Long, Long Trail will be helpful for anyone wishing to find out about the fighting in the little-known campaign in Salonika.
    British forces involved at Salonika
(The British Salonika Force) Battles and engagements In October 1915 a combined Franco-British force of some two large brigades was landed at Salonika (today called Thessalonika) at the request of the Greek Prime Minister. The objective was to help the Serbs in their fight against Bulgarian aggression. But the expedition arrived too late, the Serbs having been beaten before they landed. It was decided to keep the force in place for future operations, even against Greek opposition. The Greek Chief of the General Staff in Athens had told them " You will be driven into the sea, and you will not have time even to cry for mercy" (Some Greek factions, including King Constantine, were pro-German). The outcome of the Gallipoli campaign was in the balance and most shipping in the area was involved so they really had no choice. In December 1915 the British element fought a battle at Kosturino, north of Lake Doiran, after withdrawing from Serbia. After this there was little action except for occasional air-raids on Salonika.
