      Writing an essay
Essay writing is an art however most of the children are not comfortable when they are told to write an essay. As Parents this is what you can do to help hem write good essays and develop their language capabilities. ·Good essay writing is achieved by practice. Hence the more your kid writes the better he becomes at it. Some of the tips for writing essays can indeed be helpful. They can be found on the internet. It is also important to be clear on the subject so that one can write about it with adequate knowledge. Ask your kids questions that are relating to the easy. This will help him think of new points for the same. Clear conclusion is a must. Hence encourage your child to develop opinions on certain topics ·Encourage your kid to develop his or her own ideas. I have seen children actually mugging up essays! This should be strictly avoided because the whole purpose of writing an essay becomes meaningless. Most of the kids start with the same old clichéd lines while writing an essay. Encourage their own fresh ideas. This will develop their imagination. ·Tell your child about different types of essays such the descriptive style, argumentative style, persuasive style, informational etc.

Finding a Publisher for Your Novel
I've had a few queries recently from writers frustrated by their inability to get a publisher to look at their novel. The one below is typical:
You know, I think the one biggest need for the writing community is a primer on how to actually get printed. I have written four novels now. I have submitted one to several companies (with no answer), one to an agent (with no discernible activity), and have two waiting in the wings. It seems I can get no one to look at any of them.
How do you find a publisher that is willing to work with you? I've most often heard that "it's all in having the right contacts" but how do you establish those? I resist vanity press and don't know the first thing about web publishing. I just want someone to publish my books. I am very frustrated. Writing the book is by far the easiest part of the whole thing...
I do have a lot of sympathy with the frustration expressed here. For a new writer today (who isn't already a 'celebrity') even getting a publisher to look at your work is a challenge. For what it's worth, here are a few suggestions that may help overcome this problem.

How to Sell Your Novel Without an Agent
In spite of what you hear about publishers accepting submissions only from agents, and about what an agent can do for a writer, there are still many instances in which you don’t necessarily need an agent. This is good news at a time when it seems fewer agents than ever are open to new talent.
Small or Specialized Publishers
The smaller publishers—and today there are more than ever, most of them outside New York City—are usually perfectly happy to accept submissions directly from writers. In fact, I have found that many of them are intimidated by literary agents, and prefer to work directly with writers. You can find the names and addresses of smaller publishers, from regional presses to university presses, in Literary Market Place (LMP). This expensive volume can be found in almost any library’s reference department. It includes a listing of publishers by subject matter. If you believe that your novel has a niche audience that makes it right for one of these publishers, or has a regional appeal that makes it a good bet for a local publisher (an example would be a story based on a local historical incident), try submitting directly. Unless you have a good reason to do otherwise (for example, instructions from the publisher), begin with a query letter and follow up as appropriate.
Major Publishers Willing to Work Direct
There are still some major publishers that state openly that they are willing to receive material directly from writers. This does not mean they are happy to receive unsolicited manuscripts. It means they are willing to receive query letters from writers, and will ask to see manuscripts that sound promising. When you submit your manuscript in response to an editor’s invitation to do so, it becomes solicited.

Monday Miscellany for December 7, 2009
December 7, 2009 by Mary Anne
Filed under Monday Miscellany Leave a Comment Share Hello:  It’s finally snowing as I begin to put this column together—I say “finally” because we have gone a record number of months here in Central New York without an inch of snow.  Of course, there’s no telling whether this gentle dusting will accumulate in an inch, either.  We may continue to set an even longer record.  I used to loathe winter, but not so much these days.  In fact, I find winters here to be a particularly wonderful, unhurried time to read and write.  During warmer months, there’s a real or imagined pressure to get outside while you can still feel the warmth of sunshine on skin, a compulsion that all but disappears when flakes fall from the sky and begin to cover lawns, sidewalks and cars.    Of course, check back with me in a few months, when cabin fever strikes and that snow turns to brown mush and black ice, right?
