Magazine Writing Leads to Book Publishing
Many beginning writers overlook magazine writing. Often these new writers (and even some of the older ones) are only trying to publish books. Some people dream of holding their own novel while others are creating some how-to or nonfiction type of book. Each dream is valid and their work is to be applauded. Several years ago at a conference, I met an unpublished author who had faithfully worked on her 100,000 word novel. With three small children, this mother labored to finish her novel. I applauded and encouraged her effortyet this author was doing little else to build her reputation as a writer. I understand how people value books. I appreciate the worth and cost of writing a printed book for a traditional publisher and I've completed this task over 50 different times for many books. If you want to publish books, I want to encourage you to take a different course of action. As an editor, I read many other publications and I looked for writers who could also write for me. If I write an article, it reaches many more people than my books. On the average a book may sell 5,000 copies. Certainly some books turn into bestsellers but with more than 50,000 new books a yearmany books are fortunate to sell 5,000 copies.

    Writing for Magazines
Many new writers find that writing for children's magazines is a good way to break into the children's market. However, some writers especially writers who don't care much for reading magazines don't care for the magazine market and prefer writing books. While writing for magazines is never a prerequisite for writing and publishing books, it is certainly one way to break into the market, and can provide experience in working for editors. Fiction Did you like reading short stories when you were a child? Did you love getting magazines in the mail? Can you still remember some of the stories you read? If so, you might find your niche in writing short stories for magazines. Magazine fiction, like all children's fiction, needs to be lively, original, and well-grounded in the child's world. In general younger the child you are writing for, the more real the story needs to seem. Very young children like stories about the things they're most familiar with: mealtime, bath, bedtime, going to the library, playing with friends. A story about losing a favorite toy at the grocery store and finding it again under the vegetable bins can be an exciting adventure for a toddler. A story showing another child or animals in their bedtime routine can be a soothing read for a child who is getting ready for bed. These stories may or may not be written in rhyme, but they should have a cadence and rhythm to them. If you want to write for toddlers, read magazines geared for toddlers, such as

Freelance Writing For Magazines by Brian Scott
Writing for magazines is a great place to freelance because you can earn a good paycheck writing cover stories, features, how-to articles, interview pieces, product or travel destination reviews, and other types of articles. Plus, your byline will promote yourself as a freelance writer to the public.
        Follow these tips:
TIP #1: Most of the articles you will write for magazines will be between 800-1500 words.
TIP #2: Know the magazine before you submit your article. There's nothing worse than submitting an article with the wrong style, topic, or editorial slant to an editor who doesn't publish that kind of article.
TIP #3: If you aren't familiar with the magazine editor and the editor isn't familiar with you, then submit a non-seasonal article (not specific to a time frame) for consideration.
TIP #4: Once you have written your article, study the Internet for the best possible way to write query letters or proposals.
