3.2.2 Writing General FITS Files
The most flexible FITS format uses the binary table extension. This format can accommodate (simultaneously) scalars, vectors, arrays (in various data types) as well as character strings. To write out a FITS file with a binary table, you can use IFITSWRT: IFITSWRT,H,P1,...p15,OFN=fname,P1T=p1type,...P15T=p15type, $
P1U=p1unit,...P15U=p15unit,/update,typearr=typearr, $
unitarr=unitarr,instruc=instruc,tcomm=tcomm,/silent
H The main FITS header (if you do not have one, specify a scalar and one will be created). These are the IDL variables you wish to write to the FITS binary table. At least one is required. These keywords are where you specify data types ( e.g. , 'wavelength') for each of the Pn variables. These keywords allow you to specify the units ( e.g. , 'angstroms'). These will be included as keywords in the extension header to be written. OFN The default filename will be data.fits unless you specify a different name via the OFN keyword. update allows data to be appended to an existing binary table FITS file.

In American Food Writing, food journalist Molly O'Neill offers a literary tasting menu, her eclectic palate mingling expected entries with more than a few surprises. M. F. K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, and Alice Waters are here, of course; so are David Sedaris, S. J. Perelman, Thomas Jefferson, Gertrude Stein, Nathaniel Hawthorne, explorer Meriwether Lewis, and even McDonald's founder Ray Kroc. The list goes on. And on. Importantly, O'Neill's choices reflect the history of food and food writing in America, broad and deep and as rich as the recipes and essays that grace this volume. How important is food, after all? Reading and Writing General Transforms
General transforms are stored in files in an ascii format devised at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, and usually have a filename extension of .xfm . The input and output functions are: public Status output_transform( FILE *file, char comments[], General_transform *transform ) public Status output_transform_file( char filename[], char comments[], General_transform *transform )
These two functions write the general transform to a file, in the appropriate format. The comments line is an arbitrary string which is stored in the file for documentation purposes. Newline characters in the comments correctly result in a multi-line comment with a comment character inserted at the beginning of each line. The first form of the function assumes the file is already open and will later be closed. The second form opens the file, with a default extension of .xfm , writes the transform, then closes the file. Both functions return

Quora, wonderful crowd-sourced knowledge
The last week I signed up for Quora, as I was in no mood to work . At first, I was skeptical, thinking it was something between Twitter and Yahoo Answers. Ten minutes after registration, I was amazed. Not to mention the impeccable design and usability, the content got to me . The question were pertinent and the answers were eloquent, insightful, informed. I do not want to underestimate the software engineering effort behind Quora, but that pales in comparison to the social engineering effort required to have such chiseled user-base. In the meantime, I would like to direct your attention to a question that caught my eye What are some proven techniques to overcome fear of presenting to a group? My response to this was as follows: When giving a speech, focus less on the actual content and more on your audience:
  • who are they (entrepreneurs, corporate drones, executives, investors) ? what is their background and the keywords they respond to ?

General to Specific Order
Kate Kiefer, English Department
Composition folks talk about organization as typical patterns of presenting ideas: general to specific, specific to general, spatial, hierarchical (most to least important) and so on. Obviously, these patterns can apply both to paragraphs and to larger units of discourse, including several paragraphs in a chunk, a labeled section of a text, or the text as a whole. With this type of organization, you can either: 1. make a general statement and support that statement with specific examples or 2. provide the reader with specific information and then make a general conclusion. Deciding on which of these two to use depends on why you are writing and what information your audience requires.
