20 Steps to Writing Great Love Scenes
by Karen Wiesner
Have you ever read a love scene so perfect, your heart is full, your body is about to explode, your eyes are wet and you actually want to cry out at the beauty you've witnessed? Do you forget you've been reading "mere" words instead of experiencing the most emotional, exciting moment of your own life? Do you have the urge to light up a cigarette to savor the moment when it's done? Authors don't write these scenes with "mere words." We know there is no such thing as mere words. Words are arguably the most powerful form of communication in the world when it comes to playing with a reader's emotions. Here are twenty steps to learning how to write love scenes that will live on in your readers' memories forever. Please note that I've used examples from my own work throughout not because I believe I'm the only writer who can write effective love scenes, but because I'm a self-promoter to the extreme. Following these twenty steps, I'll list some of the greatest authors of love scenes. STEP ONE: Decide what you're comfortable reading and writing.

12-Point Guide to Writing Romance, Third Edition
Description
The second edition of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance is now completely sold out. But there is now a third reprint of the revised and expanded 2nd edition of this best-selling book. Some of the information in the original edition needed updating - for example, there were the names of some lines - Nothing stays exactly the same in romance publishing for very long. And that includes the focus of the different lines, there are changes in the guidelines and the things that editors are looking for in submissions. So obviously it was time to plan a second edition. But I also decided that if I was going to bring out a second edition, it was going to be an improved and expanded new edition as well as a revised one. I know a lot about writing romance but there are some things that only the authors who write for specific lines really know about.

BIG emotions. lots of CONFUSION.
Recently I've started waking up with songs by Mucc stuck in my head. Now, for those of you... which are most of you ...who haven't a clue who Mucc (pronounced "Muc-Koo" ) are, they're a Japanese rock band. Been around a little over ten years and musically, they tend to play whatever they want. But most often it tends to have a darker, funkier, quirky sound, that I'm enjoying presently. One day last week I woke up with the words, "La-la-la. La-la-la. La-la-la-la-la-la-la, La-la-la-la-la-la-lahhhh" melodically running through my head (" Yasashii Uta This morning, I haven't a CLUE what the words were, but the sound was there. BIG , slightly funky and loud, but with an underlying smoothness that left me feeling like the day wasn't going to be too bad. It took me a moment to realize it was " Ame No Orchestra Anyway...I don't speak Japanese and probably never will. But, I've been waking up at least a couple of times a week with their songs stuck in my head and it's only been today that I've really been able to figure out why.

Writing Romance
W riting romance?
There are a few things you need to know about the genre. Of course we are referring to Christian romance.
Christian Romance
E veryone who has ever read romance, knows the formula: boy meets girl, falls in love, has conflict, wins girl again, lives happily ever after...sort of. Compared to other genres such as mystery, which may have us clamoring for who done it, right up to the very end...romance is fairly straight forward. We know the hero and the heroine will end up together, we just don't know the path of their journey. The journey is what we are after What happens in that journey is a bit of what we shall attempt to address here.
Sex and Romance
T hough explicit sex is completely taboo to the point of forbidden in writing romance for the CR market, the blanket "no sex" statement is false as well. However, we must give extreme caution to this practice. If the act of lovemaking is in line with the story and necessary to plot, then consideration is in line. Gratuitous sex should be avoided and romantic scenes carefully considered. Practice repeating this statement:

Writing Romance – What it is, and isn’t about
So, what is a romance book? A recent article in an American Library Association journal defined romance novels as: Romance is the largest genre in fiction. Its books are bought, read, shared, discussed and loved by people of all ages and walks of life, of all educational levels from university professors to teenagers. It is a rich and diverse genre, with books ranging from pure escapist fantasy through to complex realism. It is an entertaining genre, providing millions of readers every day with relaxation and enjoyment. It is also a genre which grapples with and explores a host of social and cultural issues, large and small. Readers of romance also widely read in other genres, including literary fiction. Whether in the realms of the purely imaginary and fantastic, or clothed in gritty realism, all genre fiction aims to entertain, while affirming important values for us. Fantasy and science fiction – steeped in heroic mythology – have at the centre a recognition of our need for physical courage, integrity, and community. The crime genre, too, affirms these values, and adds intellect and reason. At their heart, romance novels affirm love and emotional courage. Romance novels are about emotion and a journey towards intimacy. They may also be about community, or family, or war, or crime, or vampires, or the aristocracy, or any of a thousand other subjects, from the fantastic to the real, but that emotional journey is central. While literary fiction often encourages a distancing of the reader from the characters, genre fiction, and romance in particular, offers readers an engaging story in which, at some level, we relate to at least one of the characters.

Writing Romance
All three of my YA novels have some romance in them. Not a ton. But some. And not the rip-your-clothes-off-and-fall-into-bed kind of romance. The kind where it's the little moments that show you the love between the two characters. I especially love this scene from FAR FROM YOU (out now in paperback, by the way!).
autumn perfection
Outside the air was cool and crisp, the way you want your sheets when it's blistering hot.
We walked to the park and ran through the leaves, picking them up and throwing them at each other, as if they were snowballs.
Instead of loud splats, we got quiet flutters of crimson and amber.
He pulled me to him,
spun me around, and we fell into a bed of foliage fit for a king.
I wanted to freeze the moment in my mind forever, because there's nothing better than flutters of the heart.
I'm working on a new project now, and as I write, I keep thinking back to one of the editorial letters my editor wrote me, where he talked about the growing attraction between two characters.
He said, "the reader needs to see the love even before the characters do, and the readers have to be rooting for it." He went on to say, "...I don't see how they truly connect and fall in love for one another."
