Letters to the Editors
Formula writing teaches conformity
published July 14, 2002 Re: Taught to remove all thought, by Lynn Stratton, July 7. As an ex-teacher in the Pinellas County public schools system, I saw the absolute truth of what Lynn Stratton was saying. I made a similar decision three years ago for the same reasons. I could no longer be part of the corruption. I couldn't pretend that, in supporting the corruption, I wasn't corrupt myself. Even though my class of fourth grade "struggling" students scored above the state average on Florida Writes, it was a hollow accomplishment. That year, my students, who had already experienced the frustration of "failure" in the "regular" classroom, had to take seven major tests. It was absurd, and had nothing to do with real education. In her article, Ms. Stratton shows clearly what happens when the absurdity is extrapolated to the college level. Conditioning first kills spontaneity, then creativity, and finally curiosity. We cannot say exactly how this will affect the larger society in years to come, but it cannot be in added goodness or righteous action.

There is no love or wisdom in teaching kids what to think, only in teaching them how to think. When we show kids the freedom of thought, to see who and what they really are, writing is a natural expression, not a formula. In seeing themselves clearly, they see each other and wonder is alive.

STEPHEN KING Where does one begin to discuss “America’s Favorite Boogeyman,” the man who is a brand-name publishing sensation unto himself?  Why, at the beginning, of course.  But the prospect of cramming this long life and prolific career into a short biography is daunting.  Nay, even scary.  Then again ... Stephen King would probably want it that way. Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine on September 21st, 1947 the only natural child of Donald King, a “door-to-door Electrolux salesman,” and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King, a homemaker.  Before Stephen’s birth, the Kings had been told that Ruth could not bear children, so they adopted a boy and named him David.  A few years later, they were happily surprised when Ruth became pregnant with Steve.  Well ... Ruth was happy.  Donald, on the other hand, went out for a pack of cigarettes when Steve was two-years-old, and was never seen or heard from again.  Ruth had to scramble fast to support her sons, and hence worked a number of jobs. After moving across the country a few times (Wisconsin, Indiana, Connecticut), the Kings returned to Durham, Maine when Steve was eleven.  Steve’s maternal grandparents were becoming too elderly to care for themselves, so Ruth King took it on herself to care for them (which she did until their deaths) after their passing, she worked in food service at Pineland, a local facility for mentally challenged residents.  Always a voracious reader, Ruth King encouraged the same in her sons, and both Dave and Steve were often wont to be seen with their nose buried in a paperback (when, of course, they weren’t down at the local movie house, taking in the latest sci-fi or horror B-picture).

What Does it Mean to Be Educated?
Can you learn what you need to know to live a meaningful lifeespecially when you're out of school and no one's insisting that you read this book or take that field trip? By Jon Spayde, Utne Reader - May/June 1998

Article Tools Print E-mail Comments RSS It's far too easy to stop learning anything you don't have to. We lead hectic lives, and by the end of the day just getting dinner on the table seems like an insurmountable challenge; who's got the energy to tackle Tolstoy, Fellini, or the latest music sensation from Cape Verde? Yet, self-education doesn't have to mean another bunch of chores to do. It can sweep a whole new spirit of creativity, excitement, and—yes!—fun into your life.

Persuasive Writing: Teach It With Models

Filed Under College Alternatives Evaluating Writing Homeschool Teaching Writing When I teach students how to write an essay , I often recommend that they look at the Opinion or Editorial pages of their local newspaper for samples of well-constructed persuasive arguments . I especially recommend that they look for two articles on the same topic that present opposing viewpoints. I came across two such articles in the Sunday edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch The first article, by scholar Charles Murray, author of Real Education: , and co-author of the controversial The Bell Curve For Most People, College Wastes Time and Money America Faces a Shortage of College Graduates I suggest that you print out both articles , and study them with your teen students, or even on your own. Note how each author introduces the topic, organizes the flow of information, and supports his thesis. Mark up the print-outs, noting skillful transitions, vivid examples, and interesting word choices. You may even want to copy a few paragraphs to internalize the flow of text.
