Much of western Wyoming constitutes a special geomorphic province known as the Wyoming Basin. The Wyoming Basin separates the Middle and Southern Rockies. Extending diagonally across the state from northwest to south is the Continental Divide, which separates the generally eastward-flowing drainage system of North America from the westward-flowing drainage of the Pacific states.

Wyoming is a western land of open ranges, colorful Wild West history, and resplendent scenery. The Native Americans of Wyoming's eastern plains conflicted heavily with white settlers, creating one of the wildest western regions in the country. Famous cowboys including Buffalo Bill and Butch Cassidy are among the state's toughest historical characters. Wyoming became the 44th state on July 10, 1890. Today, Wyoming is prized for its wildlife and National Parks. Bears, wolves, and coyotes, as well as elk, moose, and bald eagles live here among a sparse human population. Sure-footed bighorn sheep graze on the Bighorn Mountains' rocky ledges, while coyotes howl in the sagebrush thickets of Thunder Basin National Grassland. Yellowstone National Park boasts several geysers, including
