The Culture of Yemen
Yemen Culture Overview The population of Yemen is ethnically Arabic dominated by Sunni Muslims of the Shafi'i School and Shi'a Muslims of the Zaydi School. There are also small groups of Jews, Hindus, and Christians. Islam is the religion of the state. However, the constitution provides religious freedom to the followers of other religions. Conversion of a Muslim to another religion is prohibited. Non-Muslims cannot hold any elected office in the state and the constitution proclaims that Shari'a is the source of legislation. Arabic Language Yemenis speak Arabic. The different dialects of Arabic typical to the six cultural zones are used in daily life. Certain south Arabian languages like Mehri, Soqotri, and Bathari are also seen among certain sections of the population. Russian is understood in certain parts of the country. Though English is taught in private and public schools, only Arabic is predominantly used for communication. Some schools even teach French. The number of people who can speak English in Yemen is small compared to other Arab countries. Yemeni Foods For breakfast, Yemenis generally have a sweet strong tea with breads made of wheat, barley or sorghum. The most common dinner is a porridge prepared from fenugreek seeds served hot in a stone or clay bowl, consumed along with meat, eggs, herbs, spices and vegetables. Apart from sorghum, lentils and peas are the traditional staple food of the country. Boiled meat from goat or sheep served on heaps of rice is popular during feasts and celebrations. Fruits and raisins are consumed as desserts. During the recent days, poultry, fish and dairy products are becoming popular. Qat is a narcotic bush, like the coca plant. Over 90 percent of the population chews qat for more than five hours a day.

Date palms are cultivated in small oases, and the population is semi nomadic. There are salt deposits near Shabwa, Safir, and Harib. The limestone tableland of Hadhramaut and Wadi Masila has valleys (wadis) carved deep into the plateau. Cultivated patches are irrigated with rain and flood waters and from wells. Hinterlands towns include Shibam, Sayun, and Tarim in the Inner Wadi, and there are seaports at al-Mukalla and al-Shihr. The adjacent Mahra province and Socotra island are culturally related to this zone. The Gulf of Aden coastal plain, which is five to ten miles (eight to sixteen kilometers) wide, is discontinuous. Its ports, from Aden in the west to Sayhut and al-Ghayda in the east, are connected with the inland regions rather than with one another. Demography.

    Danish impressions of Yemen (Culture).
A group of Danish citizens visited Yemen recently on a cultural study tour. For all involved it was a first time visit to Yemen, and for most it was the first time they had visited any country in the Middle East. The group included a teacher of history and comparative religions, an arts and design teacher, a social worker in a hospital, a retired nurse, a prison guard, a chemist (jargon) chemist - (Cambridge) Someone who wastes computer time on number crunching when you'd far rather the computer were working out anagrams of your name or printing Snoopy calendars or running life patterns. May or may not refer to someone who actually studies chemistry. who is also an activist and his son who is currently at university.
The tour lasted two weeks and included visits to Sana'a, Manakha, Ibb, Mahwait, Taiz, Kawkaban, Zabid, and Hodeidah. "We hesitated before coming because of the risk, and especially because other governments had already issued travel warnings. But our government had no particular instruction so we decided to go ahead."

    Yemen : Culture
Yemen is a part of the Islamic world and as such reflects many of the contemporary trends in Islam. At the same time, the Yemenis are intensely proud of their pre-Islamic heritage. The national museum in San'a' and the archaeological museum in Aden house valuable treasures from this time. In their considerable networks of overland and maritime trade, the ancient Yemenis encountered myriad cultures and civilizations. There is ample demonstrate of Greek, Roman, Indian, Indonesian, and Chinese determine on various aspects of both orthodox and contemporary Yemeni culture. Similarities have been drawn, for example, between marriage institutions in India and Yemen and between religious music in Yemen and Byzantine masses. cultural differences abound between regional groups in Yemen. Many of the inhabitants of Hadhramaut reflect the cultural and genetic determine of Southeast Asia with which the district has historic commercial ties. Those Yemenis living in the coastal lowlands reflect the racial and cultural determines of nearby Africa, and cosmopolitan Aden, which Great Britain governed as part of India from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, still bears traces of the culture of the Indian subcontinent. best-known characteristic of Yemeni culture is its architecture, which dates back more than 2,000 years. In the mountainous interior, buildings are constructed of stone blocks to a height of four to six stories, with highly decorated windows and other features designed to beautify them and emphasize their height. In the desert regions, the buildings are usually made of adobe, with the various layers emphasized and often tinted.

In 1962 an army coup led to the proclamation of a republic. Civil war followed, with Egypt supporting the republicans and Saudi Arabia and Jordan backing the royalists; it ended in 1970 with a republic in place. The southern portion bordering on the Gulf of Aden was penetrated in the 19th cent. by the British, who conquered Aden in 1839 and between 1886 and 1914 signed a number of protectorate treaties with local rulers. Aden was made a crown colony in 1935, and the area to its east became the Aden Protectorate in 1937. In the 1960s, nationalist groups demanding independence began a terrorist campaign against the British, and independence was granted to Southern Yemen in 1967. The National Liberation Front gained control of the government and established a Marxist regime in 1971. Unity agreements between the two Yemens in 1971 and 1981 were not implemented because of recurrent warfare, but a merger negotiated in 1989 resulted in formal unification in 1990. Pres. Ali Abdullah Saleh of Northern Yemen became president. By 1993, however, relations between the north and south had grown tense, and fighting between army units in 1994 erupted into a nine-week civil war in which northern forces were victorious. Yemen clashed with Eritrea over control of the Hanish Islands in the Red Sea in 1995; the Hague Tribunal awarded the islands to Yemen in 1998.
