New York, May 7, 2009The Committee to Protect Journalists is deeply concerned about the Yemeni government's decision to ban at least eight newspapers that have covered unrest in the southern part of the country. Dozens of journalists gathered today in front of the country's press syndicate in the capital, Sana'a, to protest the government's decision to suspend the newspapers, The Associated Press reported. A similar demonstration was held in the southern city of Aden On Monday, the Ministry of Information barred the sale of six newspapers, according to a copy of an order posted on Yemeni and international web sites. The ministerial order covered the privately owned Al-Masdar Al-Wattani Al-Diyar, Al-Mustaqila, Al-Nida and Al-Share , all of which reported recent unrest in the southern parts of the country, according to local press reports. SERKAN , a Zaidi Shiite of the northern Hashed tribes, was born in the town of Al Ahmar in 1942. With less than elementary education, he joined the North Yemeni armed forces at an early age and became a corporal. He was promoted by his tribal leaders in 1977 when the then president of North Yemen, Ahmad Al Ghashmi (an ally of one Hashed tribe) appointed him as military governor of Taiz. After Ghashmi's assassination on June 24, 1978, Saleh became a member of a four-man provisional council of the presidency. On July 17, 1978, Saleh became president of the republic, chief of staff and commander in chief of the armed forces – having been unusually promoted to the rank of major and then colonel. Later he became a general. In December 1997, parliament approved his promotion to field marshal and a statement said this was "in recognition of his historical role and the political, economic and social achievements" in the course of his mandate. Saleh now is the highest ranking military officer in Yemen.

Yemen - Government
Following the US-led military offensive against Iraq, Yemen issued a statement in which it condemned the action, and hundreds of thousands of Yemenis demonstrated in support of Iraq.
In mid-September 1990, in what was regarded as a retaliatory action, Saudi Arabia announced that it had withdrawn the privileges which Yemeni workers had previously enjoyed.
The Governments of Yemen and Saudi Arabia held negotiations on the subject of the demarcation of their common border in July1992 in Switzerland, and in May 1993 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Negotiations continued into 1994; however, in December Yemen accused Saudi Arabia of trespassing on territory of Yemen and alleged that three Yemeni soldiers had been killed during clashes earlier in that month.
Intense mediation by Syria culminated in a joint statement in mid-January, in which Yemen and Saudi Arabia pledged to cease all military activity in the border area. It was subsequently announced that the demarcation of the disputed border would be undertaken by a joint committee.
In 1983 Saleh resigned from the presidency but was unanimously reelected by the National Assembly, which he had created the year before. Saleh worked to implement democratic reforms and in 1988 replaced the National Assembly with the Consultative Council.
