Youth Activism
When someone says “youth activist”, they think of an outspoken young person who cares about their community, fights for social justice, wants to make a change, and thinks about their future. There are lots of young people who are making a difference right now, just by opening their mouths and speaking up on issues that they feel are very important. Each and every young person can make a difference. Historically youth and students have led social justice movements. We tend to be most affected by oppression so we are fighting it the most. No one is ever alone in the fight for peace and justice. As a whole, young people have been telling the world " what we want and when we want it". We must learn to become one voice and be heard as a whole, so our future can be better for the youth that will come after. Learn More About Youth Activism The Movement for Youth Rights: 1945-2000

48. Youth Activism - Premodern Europe, Colonial And Early America, The Era Of The Ci

Premodern Europe
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries universities such as Bologna, Oxford, and Paris took the lead in reviving higher education in Europe. At Bologna foreign students enjoyed no civil rights and often found themselves at the mercy of price-gouging landlords and merchants. In spite of their apparent powerlessness, however, Bologna students could easily migrate to other universities. The lack of residential campus accommodations and classroom buildings gave students enormous mobility, as well as economic leverage over their schools. Bologna students, for instance, could withhold payment if faculty failed to show up for lectures. Once medieval universities began to construct housing and lecture halls, however, students became more rooted and fell under the authority of campus administrators. Sanctions against student offenders could range from expulsion to being required to purchase rounds of wine for the aggrieved parties. When student offenders came from the aristocracy, offers of financial restitution from their fathers served as substitutes for expulsion and flogging. Although the lethal combat ensuing from the Saint Scholastica Day riot was disproportionate to the immediate provocation, the seeds of discord had deep roots. Isolated incidents of assaults between students and locals had occurred for years. Indeed, between the years 1297 and 1322 nearly half the murders in the community had been committed by Oxford students.

African American Youth Activism Toward a Politics of Relevance: Race, Resistance and African American Youth Activism By Shawn Ginwright Published on: Jun 07, 2006 Shawn Ginwright is an Associate Professor of Education in the Africana Studies Department at San Francisco State University. In 1989, Dr. Ginwright founded Leadership Excellence Inc. an innovative youth development agency located in Oakland, California that trains African American youth to address pressing social and community problems. In 1999, he received his Ph.D. from the University of California Berkeley. His research examines the ways in which youth in urban communities navigate through the constraints of poverty and struggle to create equality and justice in their schools and communities. He is the author of Black in School: Afrocentric Reform, Black Youth and the Promise of Hip-Hop Culture . He has published extensively on issues related to urban youth in journals such as Social Problems, Social Justice, Urban Review, and New Directions in Youth Development. He is a highly sought speaker to national and international audiences.
The Politics of Activism Among African American Youth
In recent years, social science research about African American youth has focused almost entirely on understanding various causes of problem behavior such as violence, school failure, substance abuse and crime. While a deeper understanding of these social problems is indeed important, the narrow focus on problems obscures the complex ways in which youth respond, challenge and sometimes transform the conditions in their schools and communities. As a result of this narrow focus, we are left with an understanding of African American youth that centers primarily on understanding problems, prevention and pathology and does not sufficiently explain how they engage in civic and political behavior.
