Youth Advocacy today consists of two components. One provides substance abuse intervention services to a target population of at-risk youth 13-17 years old and their parents. It does this by using a curriculum that has been scientifically tested and found to produce the desired result of reducing and/or delaying the onset of drug use among the target population. This is known as the Creating Lasting Family Connections (CLFC) program. It is an 18-week educational and skills building program funded by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) with matching monies from the City of Austin and Travis County. We serve approximately 130-150 youth and parents in this program annually.
The Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the City of Austin, and Travis County has consistently supported youth Advocacy since its inception in 1975. Few other grass roots organizations have enjoyed this kind of support for such a period of time. In 1996, it was deemed as an agency, which provided "critical services" to a high-risk population and was funded by Travis County as a sole source contract.

Youth Advocacy is a strategy employed by the Union 98 Coordinated School Health Program to actively engage our students in the health issues that affect them. Working in close cooperation with our Service-Learning program, projects that utilize a Youth Advocacy approach challenge students to take ownership of an issue and effectively discover and advocate for a solution.
The benefits to our Students are multiple:
-A broader and deeper understanding of the issue being explored
-Practicing of skills needed for effective community change
-An understanding and appreciation of the importance of Civic Engagement
-Increased community-ownership of solutions to issues facing our Schools
-An opportunity to explore concepts through authentic learning experiences, rather than books and paperwork By focusing on issues of student health, and blending the strategies in the above diagram, we are able to create projects that are fueled by student interest, effectively address content area objectives, and create meaningful changes to school policy and environment.

Youth Outreach in San Francisco
Pie Ranch
Pie Ranch is a small-scale, nonprofit organic farm in coastal Pescadero, CA, dedicated to educational programs related to food and farming as well as natural and cultural history. They began their youth education programs in 2005, inviting inner-city school groups out to experience a working farm. Through hands-on farm work and collective reflection at Pie Ranch, San Francisco teenagers discover new competencies and insights that benefit them as individuals and in community. Mission Pie employs former students of Pie Ranch, and purchases and bakes with many of the ingredients cultivated by the students and farmers on Pie Ranch, thereby supporting youth in understanding the full circle of food production.
