An advocate can listen and support you in many different ways, below are a few examples: Jimmy, a young boy of 15 was attending a Children’s Hearing because he was expressing violent behaviour and not going to school very often. Jimmy was a bit nervous and decided that he couldn’t talk for himself at the Hearing, so he asked an advocate to go along with him to speak for him. The advocate and Jimmy met up a few times before the Hearing so that he had a chance to tell the advocate how he felt and what he wanted the advocate to say for him. On the day, the advocate went along with Jimmy and said exactly what he wanted said. Jimmy felt much better because his opinions and feelings were clearly heard by everyone in the room and he didn’t have to speak out in front of his Parent. Upcoming Trainings Developing Professional Strengths " Getting Beyond the System has been invaluable in helping us prepare the teens we work with transition out of care and into adulthood.
While at the same time being theoretically grounded, its appeal to our adolescent population lies in its practicality and relevance to their world. It is hard to imagine any older adolescent in our care who would not benefit greatly from participating in this program."
Bill Baccaglini, Executive Director, New York Foundling Hospital
"Casey Family Services brought Youth Advocacy Center in to train our life skills and training staff from all over New England and Baltimore… It was excellent…relevant to our life skills work with foster and other youth in all 8 of our divisions…it’s clear to me that the Getting Beyond the System approach, with its emphasis on case studies and thoughtful coaching in self-advocacy, will significantly enhance our life skills work with challenged youth and their families."

* Helping Kids Create and Succeed*
About us!
The organization's mission is to focus on CHILDREN who have been exposed to family violence. We provide positive interaction for youth who have lost a parent due to Domestic Violence. We service youth ages 3 years old to 12 years old. Referrals can be made by family members, friends, social service agencies or community organizations. Additional services are available for youth ages 6 - 19 years old, who may be at risk of repeating a cycle of domestic abuse.
DYA's current goal is to educate the community, spread the word about family violence and encourage children, while empowering them to know: That they CAN break the cycle! It's NOT their fault! Domestic Violence must END! Long Term Goal DYA's 5 year goal is to house youth in At Risk Environments that need additional support to reduce behaviors that can lead to incarceration while educating youth on domestic violence (i.e. the warning signs, how to get help, who to talk to). If you would like additional information on how you can volunteer or information on youth participation, contact us.

JJPL What We Do Youth Prison Conditions Youth Advocacy Alternatives To Incarceration Youth Advocacy Photo by Nadine Batya Children are filling our juvenile courts every day without the support of a true advocate to help them and their families understand the system. Despite the fact the every child accused of a crime has a right to a defense attorney, young people across the state are finding themselves facing serious legal consequences without a dedicated juvenile defender to fight on their behalf. Not only are children and their families rarely aware of their legal rights, few public defenders have the time or resources to explain them, let alone adequately represent them.
A recent report entitled The Children Left Behind describes the numerous barriers to effective representation for delinquent youth in Louisiana, including crushing caseloads, lack of training and supervision, inadequate funding, high use of pleas and waiver, and an over-reliance on probation officers. In July 2002, the American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Center released The Children Left Behind Annual Update . The Annual Update was prepared in collaboration with the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana in order to update stakeholders on the status of juvenile defense since the publication of the original ABA assessment last June.
By fighting to keep young people out of the system and advocating for appropriate community-based interventions when necessary, zealous advocates ensure that children have the best opportunities for success, thereby strengthening both the communities where they live and the core values of the juvenile justice system. Without effective advocacy too many children are placed in prisons without any effective accountability interventions and with a high likelihood of repeating criminal behavior when they are released. More devastatingly, opportunities for personal growth and development are damaged when youth are locked away from their homes and families. JJPL recognizes the crucial role the juvenile defender plays in protecting children and ultimately, their communities. As such, JJPL represents juvenile clients in individual cases throughout the state through its
