Adult mentors are usually unrelated to the child or teen and work as volunteers through a community-, school-, or church-based social service program. Although informal mentoring relationships exist, formal, high-quality mentoring matches made through local or state mentoring organizations are often the most effective. According to the encyclopedia of informal education "The classic definition of mentoring is of an older experienced guide who is acceptable to the young person and who can help ease the transition to adulthood by a mix of support and challenge. In this sense it is a developmental relationship in which the young person is inducted into the world of adulthood." Jean E. Rhodes explores the experience of some different youth mentoring programs and concludes that not all approaches to mentoring are equal in impact.. She argues that mentoring programs are not a substitute for a caring family, community support, or a concerted youth policy agenda and that we should ensure that mentor programs are adequately implemented and evaluated, while broadening our efforts to strengthen the caring capacity of adolescents’ families, schools, and communities.

Effectiveness of volunteer mentoring
Although these findings are encouraging, caution should be used in generalizing them to other mentoring programs. BBBS affiliates tend to carefully screen, train, and support their volunteers, and maintain a degree of quality control. In fact, most BBBS programs require a year’s commitment of their volunteers, to whom they provide at least six hours of training and ongoing supervision. Unfortunately, this level of training and support is not available in many of the mentoring programs that have emerged in recent years. In fact, a survey of more than 700 mentoring programs found that 36% of volunteers received less than two hours of training and 22% received none at all. Similarly, 20% of volunteers “almost never” talk to staff people in their programs and 9% have no contact with staff at all.

YOUTH MENTORING INCREASED GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY, the lack of organized youth activities in poor neighborhoods, and the rise of single-parent families and families with two working parents have all reduced the number of adult role models (Sipe ). Today, twenty-five percent of children live with a single parent, and over one-half of children will live with only one parent before they are eighteen years old (Tierney, Grossman and Research NL ). Youth mentoring programs exist to provide these role models and help a child develop socially and emotionally. Mentors help kids learn to understand and communicate their feelings, to relate to their peers, and to develop relationships with other adults. Increasingly popular, by 2002 there were over 1,700 child mentoring groups registered with the National Mentoring Database (DuBois et al.
We also know more about strategies that make youth mentoring programs work. This research is important, because ineffective mentoring programs can do real harm to adolescent youth (Grossman and Rhodes

This article has been tagged since March 2006. Youth mentoring is the process of matching caring, concerned adults with young people who may be at risk. The adult is usually unrelated and works as a volunteer through a community, school or church based social service program. History
However, many young people do not have these natural mentors (for a variety of reasons). So, social service programs have developed to fill this gap. These social service programs are of many varieties. Some developed from faith communities. Others are funded by government programs. Still others are community based without any formal affiliations. But they all share the common goal of strengthening our communities by providing mentors for young people.
Benefits of Youth Mentoring
Intuitively we know youth mentoring is good for young people. However, many studies have provided evidence that youth mentoring has many positive outcomes for young people, adults and their communities.

My definition of a mentor is apparently broader than most. The common image the word brings to most people's minds is someone from Big Brothers or any other similar organization. But there should be no limits. Mentoring can be a one-time event or it can last a lifetime. Any adult can offer their love and wisdom to any child at any time. All it takes is offering whatever you have available to a child you know who appears to need it. And that sharing can happen whenever the occasion presents itself. Allow me to offer a few examples. As the single mother of four children I definitely believe in the it takes a village to raise a child' philosophy. There is only one of me to provide for and serve a quartet of very different personalities. Without the influence of other adults and older peers I don't know how I could ever have been there for so many offspring so much of the time when there is only one of me. Mentors in various stages and shapes have been a part of their lives from the time each was born. And we have acquired new members ever since. First of all there are the wonderful adult friends in our lives. Along with all manner of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins already connected to us, my children have also had several non-biological aunts and uncles who have been there for them through the years some have been as good as family since before each child was born. Before, during and after the divorce, these wonderful men and women joined me and my children on all sorts of outings and trips as well as exchanging visits in our homes to spend quality time with myself and my brood. On plenty of occasions I was not quite so outnumbered and overwhelmed by my progeny. These get-togethers not only gave me a break as a parent but enriched everyone with new experiences and new ideas. These wonderful friends as well as my children have definitely benefited from every contact as we have spent time together.

We can not expose fatherless kids to this Christian example by planning events. These blessed ministry opportunities take place at the times and places of God’s choosing as our mentors faithfully “pray up” and then show up to share their lives, and God’s love, with our kids just a few hours each and every week. It costs $40/mo to pay for the training and support that keeps one Christian youth mentor on this mission field for one year.

Leading With Presence
October 20, 2010, 1:52 pm Leaders are a key element of any successful organisation or business, without effective and engaging leaders in place a company built on people will lack direction and be unable to fulfil their objectives. The trouble with leadership is that not every leader knows how to act when they are initially given their leadership position. To combat this many businesses invest in executive coaching and leadership skills training, but the focus of this type of development is on practical skills rather than interpersonal skills. The missing ingredient which leaders sometimes lack can be found in the concept of Leadership Presence.

19. Christian Youth Mentoring Program For At Risk Youth
Children growing up in very difficult circumstances need to experience Christian love that is expressed over time. Learn how our Christian youth mentoring program has successfully
http://liyouthmentoring.com/liym/liym.html
Christian Mentoring Ministry Rationale
We all have a picture in our mind of the type of child that Christian Youth Mentoring works with. We see them in the news and hanging out on street corners. We call them "troubled teens" or "at risk kids." However, many other children who are common to Christian Youth Mentoring are unseen, unnoticed, withdrawn and too often friendless. God sees all these children and calls them "Mine." A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His Holy dwelling.
(Psalm 68:5) God loves these at risk kids and is concerned about them. He is sending His people to go to them, to express His love and to show them the way out of multi-generational bondage. God spoke to Moses from a bush. "I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them… I am sending you."
Children growing up in very difficult circumstances need to experience love that is expressed over time. Our mentors spend 2-4 hours with these children each week. The consistency of this commitment speaks loudly. It says, "You are valuable. What you think about and the things that bother you are important."
