Youth Mentoring
"Young people will find a way to meet their needs… even if this means moving in directions that are not approved of by family and/or community. Whether or how young people meet their needs depends in large part on the strength and direction of influences and opportunities in their lives".
-Youth Development Institute
Youth mentoring is one of the most under utilized tools in America for the successful development of intelligent and prosperous young men and women. Young people today need multi-dimensional care in order to successfully mature into well rounded individuals. Unfortunately, a majority of youth today are not receiving the attention they need in order to reach their full potential (Boyle 1). Without proper guidance, these youth are participating in high levels of at risk behaviors, such as substance abuse and violence. When faced with difficult situations, it is easy for a young person to make poor choices. A youth mentor provides an extra outlet for these adolescents when a parent, sibling, or friend is not available, or even able to make the best choices for the adolescent. Youth mentoring is needed now more than ever.

Teaching teens to be adults. Any conversation about teens has to start with some questions about children. Why do children obey their parents? Why do children seek the approval of their parents. Sorry, but it is not all the result of good parenting. It's mostly an evolutionary imperative. In prehistoric times the children who ran away didn't live long enough to have their own children. So we have evolved kids who depend on parents for nurturing and protection. This is the important part, kids depend on parents for nurturing. After puberty however the child's needs change. Teens can for the most part protect themselves. Teens need parents to teach them to be adults. Far too many parents try to nurture and protect their teens the same way they nurtured and protected them as children. This is why teens spend more time with friends than family. They need to know that their opinions and ideas matter. They need to be involved in family decision making . Parenting styles must be age appropriate. Parents must be protectors to their children and mentors to their teens. Don't misunderstand. A fourteen year old should have a curfew, all kids should have boundaries, but hard nosed total control will drive kids to seek mentoring elsewhere. Usually from other teens. The major cause of youth crime is not TV. It's kids learning to be adults from other kids. Also complete lack of control will leave your teen floundering, seeking someone to tell her what to do. Parents must be mentors.

While answering any questions, consider the following:
The Mentor's Role: There is a term in Transactional Analysis called "the Rescuer." The Rescuer is defined as someone who puts 51% (or more) of the effort into solving a problem. This may sound noble, but it ultimately results in resentment on the part of "the Victim." By over-helping, we deny empowerment and self-esteem to the other person launching or continuing them in a pattern of dependency and powerlessness. Your major role as a Mentor is to help a child grow - in maturity and decision-making skills. Your mentee may have a number of problems at home or school - problems you may never have experienced. Do not pity him/her, or try to "fix" everything yourself. Your efforts might interfere with the child's own wishes, family desires, or teacher endeavors.

    Mentor At-Risk Youth
by Jamie Littlefield Mentoring makes a big difference: When kids enjoy a regular, positive activity with an adult over the course of a year, those kids are 46% less likely to begin using drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school. This decreases drug-related suspensions, drug-related crime, and the number of babies born drug-affected. Youth mentors are desperately needed to provide companionship and guidance to at-risk children. Family tragedy, divorce, and financial problems can leave a child lonely and longing for adult support. These children need help with their school work, a listening ear, and unwavering encouragement. Unfortunately, school teachers in crowded classrooms have little time to give individual attention. School counselors are busy too, and most high school students receive less than three hours of career guidance during their four years of high school. There are 14.6 million at-risk young people who need mentors ; by volunteering as a youth mentor you can help one of them have a better life.
