Youth Mentoring
About this page
Youth mentoring provides a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement. Youth mentoring programs can vary in their delivery but there are some common key elements that define youth mentoring. Youth mentoring:
  • Empowers young people to develop to their fullest potential Is a strategy to develop active community partnerships Is voluntary for young people and mentors Fosters caring and supportive relationships Involves positive role modelling not counselling Is ‘safe’ for all invo lved
Coaching and tutoring are not mentoring. Mentoring focuses on the relationship while coaching and tutoring focus on skills, performance and targets. Youth mentoring is an effective way of providing young people with a supportive and enriching experience.

Youth Mentoring Hospital workers are natural mentors. They are driven toward excellence, service and problem resolution. They have chosen to work within a community of dedicated caregivers. They are teachers as well as lifelong learners. A successful, hospital-based mentoring project launched 10 years ago to help at-risk inner city youth now is a benchmark solution for health workforce shortages. Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Commonwealth Fund , a private foundation supporting healthcare policy, research and access, joined in 1993 to create the Hospital Youth Mentoring Partnership (YMP). Fifteen major medical centers participated in the initiative, aimed at ending the cycle of poverty and despair that too often engulf urban teens. Social research revealed that ambitious and capable inner city youth who managed to succeed often permanently left their troubled neighborhoods. A lack of adult role models perpetuated the cycle of economic struggle in each generation. The YMP hospitals developed individual youth mentoring programs that shared core components, including the following:
  • Programs were coordinated with local schools. They offered a variety of work experiences in addition to mentoring relationships, including job shadowing, summer and part-time jobs during the school year, and both paid and unpaid internships.

Several years ago, the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame recognized that involving potential future career agriculturists would be a perfect complement to the existing awards gathering. The Hall of Fame had been effective in identifying those who were truly worthy of recognition due to their monumental impact upon Florida agriculture and the state as a whole. The Hall was successfully attracting several hundred agriculturists to the banquet to share and reinforce the honor of selection for the recipients.
However, if agriculture was to remain relevant for future generations, it would be important to involve the next generation of agriculturists and encourage them to consider agriculture as a viable, honorable and hugely important career option. What better way to accomplish this objective than to provide an immersion opportunity where youngsters can see the tremendous impact that single dedicated individuals can produce? What better way is there to legitimize a vocation than to have a collection of hundreds of agricultural leaders from around the state that have already chosen agriculture as a vocation and are successful in their own right?
Every year, FAHF searches for the state’s treasure of agricultural youth and offers to provide them with the opportunity to glance into their future. The agricultural community donates enough support for the program to place a youngster at each of the 80-100 tables filled with agriculturists for the event. These youngsters come to the Florida State Fairgrounds early and assemble as a group, allowing time for networking with their peers. Here they are given suggestions as to how they can get the most from their evening. They also have the opportunity to meet and hear from a previous inductee of the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame. Those who have also submitted an application for a Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame scholarship learn if they are one of the ten or so selected for a $500 boost for their educational quest toward their future career.
