Culture There are eight distinct languages spoken by Yukon First Nation peoples: Tlingit and six Athapaskan languages - Upper Tanana, Gwitchin, Han, Northern Tutchone, Southern Tutchone, Kaska and Tagish. Others, including Tahltan are less well represented but are also part of Yukon First Nations' cultural heritage.
History Yukon First Nations elders and people have many stories and legends about the creation of earth and the first human inhabitants. These stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and are an important part of the Yukon First Nations culture. Along with these stories, archaeologists theorize that the first people crossed a land bridge from Asia to northern Canada during the Pleistocene Ice Age between 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. This link between continents was estimated to be 2,400 kilometres wide. The growth of glaciers lowered sea levels and exposed portions of continental shelves which created this broad land bridge. Parts of northern Alaska and Yukon remained ice-free during the last ice age and provided a haven for many animals and humans fleeing from colder regions. Archaeologists suggest early inhabitants of the Yukon hunted woolly mammoths, bison, horses and caribou. They lived in small family groups which travelled with the animals.

“From this Project, we intentionally invested in people and product development – to not only present Yukon First Nations to the world, but also to continue the energy and inspiration from the Games for all Yukon First Nations,” said Katie Johnson, Co-Executive Producer of Project YFN 2010.  “The greatest consideration in anything we do moving forward is that it must be guided by the contingent that shared this Olympic experience”.
The first step in Legacy Planning includes a meeting of a smaller and representative group from the full team to begin discussions, present ideas and facilitate next steps planning.  From there, this group or ‘council’ will guide all work moving forward, together with support and input from partners, funders and the larger Yukon community.

History of the Book in Canada: The Yukon
F ew published scholarly resources exist to facilitate development of a history of the book in Yukon. Fundamental work has gathered together basic resources but print culture in Yukon is largely unmapped territory. This paper will suggest avenues by which to approach the mass of archival material available, and attempt to raise historiographical concerns pertinent to authorship, printing, publishing, and reading in Yukon.
Introduction
Yukon, a territory located in the northwestern-most corner of Canada, boasts an area of 483,450 square kilometres and a population of 3,610 Native people and approximately 24,045 non-Native residents. Two events have indelibly marked Yukon history into three periods: the discovery of gold on Rabbit Creek near present-day Dawson in August 1896 and the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942. Explorers, traders, and missionaries were relatively few in comparison to the indigenous population prior to 1896. The discovery of gold precipitated an unprecedented migration of people to the territory, particularly the Klondike area near Dawson that gave its name to the rush. The migration firmly established print culture in the territory.

    Life in Whitehorse
Selected photographs from the Rolf and Margaret Hougen Collection Rolf Hougen first got interested in photography when he was ten years old. Since then he has taken thousands of photos, documenting community events, sports, parades, weddings and daily life. In later years, Rolf and his wife Marg had a darkroom in their home, and he developed, printed and enlarged his own photographs. He took some photographs for commercial clients and sold others in the photo department of the family store. He also had a personal interest in preserving Yukon history. Rolf donated his first lot of negatives to the Yukon Archives more than 25 years ago. He recently donated another thousand images and there is another thousand or more to go. These photos in this exhibit are just some of the many engaging images that you can see in his collection at the Yukon Archives.
