Yukon History
The great gold rush of 1896-1899 attracted people from all over the world to the land of the midnight sun. Although the lure of the gold rush has passed, the magic of Yukon dreams and adventures is as strong as ever. People are still attracted to the majestic mountains, wide valleys and winding rivers. Fort Selkirk, on the Yukon River, was originally established by Robert Campbell in 1852 as a Hudson's Bay Post. It was the first non-native settlement on the Upper Yukon River. It was destroyed by Chilkats the next year. The town site remained abandoned until 1889 when Arthur Harper operated the post until the Klondike Gold Rush. In 1899, it became the headquarters of the Yukon Field Force of the Canadian Army. Churches and schools were built and, in 1938, the Hudson's Bay Company returned to build a post.

A Modern Legend: The Yukon Gold Rush
In 1896, three prospectors struck it rich in the Yukon. George Carmack, Skookum Jim , and Dawson Charlie found a rich deposit of gold in Bonanza Creek. This discovery inspired thousands of would-be prospectors to head north and turned Dawson City into the largest city west of Winnipeg by the turn of the century. It was during this time, in 1898, that the Yukon earned its current political status.
      Easy Access: The Alaska Highway
Most prospectors who headed north to the Gold Rush had to make an arduous trek up the Chilkoot Trail More than 30,000 US Army personnel were involved in the construction of the Alaska Highway, which was built to transport war supplies. This road stretches over 2,230 kilometres from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Fairbanks, Alaska. The Alaska Highway forever changed the culture, economy, and political system of the Yukon. First Nations people drifted away from their traditional riverside communities to the highway. Boats and trains were replaced by the more efficient road system.

They worked two claims on Bonanza Creek until sometime after the flood of 1903 when he headed to the Upper Liard River area. He was the first white man to travel over land to this area, most traveled on the rivers. He married Adela Stone and they settled on the shores of Fish Lake, later to be known as Watson Lake and led a life of a prospector and trapper. He moved his family a few miles north to Windid Lake as more people started to settle in the area. He died in 1938 after contracting pneumonia while in Lower Post. He died in route to Fort Saint John after being airlifted out on a mail plane. His children and grandchildren continue to be an intricate part of the Watson Lake community. A Brief Description
Yukon History
This northern Canadian territory's history is marked by what is often regarded as the world's greatest gold rush.
It is believed that ancestors of the Amerindians crossed a bridge over the Bering Sea from Asia approximately 10,000 to 25,000 years ago, establishing the Yukon as the first inhabited region of Canada
Around 1840, two explorers from the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) arrived in the area with the aid of maps and information from Sir John Franklin and other early European explorers. Six years later, HBC coined the name "Yukon," from the Loucheux Indian word "Yuchoo," meaning "the greatest river."
The name held true, as evidenced by the gold discoveries of the early 1870s along the tributaries of the Yukon River bringing prosperity to the area. In 1876 pioneer George Carmack discovered rich gold deposits on Bonanza Creek, a small tributary of the Klondike River, which connects to the Yukon River Only miniscule amounts of gold had been mined prior to this discovery, thus leading to the great

SPECIAL TO THE SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER A trip to Dawson City, Yukon, always spells adventure. This unique little town at the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush was built on it. . The adventure started during the stampede of 1898, when just getting to Dawson meant surmounting an eternal obstacle course of wild rivers, mountains and muck. . What was once the misery of more than 30,000 gold seekers has since become an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. And Dawson City, with its ideal location and historical significance, serves as the perfect starting point from which to begin your journey. . Still a frontier town of mud streets, boardwalks, ramshackle buildings and saloons, Dawson City's streetscape offers the visitor a satisfying balance of vigilant preservation and quiet decay.
