Subject Index - Animals 1.  Zebras are animals that resemble the horse. They walk, trot, canter and gallop like horses, but do not move as quickly.  Unlike the horse, zebras have not been domesticated and run wild.
    2.  They are odd-toed ungulates which means they have an odd number of toes on each hoof.
    3.  Their eyes are located on the side of their head, and they have excellent eyesight.  Because zebras live in the wild, they need to be able to escape predators.  Night vision helps them to see in the dark.  Zebras also have great hearing and an excellent sense of taste and smell.
    4.  Three species of zebras live in Africa.  The species are the Plains Zebra, which is the most common one,  the Mountain Zebra, and the Grevy Zebra.
    5.  Zebras are a short, stocky animal that is generally about 8 feet long and stands between 4 and 5 feet at the shoulder.  They can weigh up to 650 pounds.
    6.  The have black coats with white stripes and a short, coarse mane that stands straight up in the air.  Their shiny coats help control the heat from the sun.  The stripes on a zebra are

When all the zebras keep together as a big group, the pattern of each zebra's stripes blends in with the stripes of the zebras around it. See more pictures of animal camouflage To humans, a zebra's stripes stick out like a sore thumb, so it's hard to imagine that the stripes act as camouflage . Zoologists believe stripes offer zebras protection from predators in a couple of different ways. The first is as simple pattern-camouflage, much like the type the military uses in its fatigue design . The wavy lines of a zebra blend in with the wavy lines of the tall grass around it. It doesn't matter that the zebra's stripes are black and white and the lines of the grass are yellow, brown or green, because the zebra's main predator, the lion, is

    Zebras
by Krysta Cardinale The zebra is known for its unique black and white striped skin. There are several different types of zebras. The most commonly found, and popular, is the Plains Zebra. The other types include the BurchellÂ’s Zebra, Mountain Zebra, GreyÂ’s Zebra, and the extinct Quagga Zebra. Zebras are members of the horse family and have a typical lifespan of twenty-eight years. The zebraÂ’s shiny coat is more than just a pretty second skin. Information on zebras reveal their black and white stripes have been proven to stave off up to 70 percent of incoming heat generated by the sun and many scientists also believe that they aid the zebra in combating the effects of solar radiation. A zebraÂ’s coat also serves as a camouflage. Known as disruptive coloration, the striped pattern breaks up the bodyÂ’s outline and confuses potential predators, especially in the evening, when their shape becomes more difficult to discern. No two zebras are identical, the differences in stripes gives them their identity among their herd and to their young. The studies done reveal information on zebras such as their top recorded speed is 55km/hr. This speed is slower than a horse; however a zebra has a much higher endurance. Zebras tend to be a very social species. They often form groups or families consisting of one male and three or more females and their current offspring. Young bachelor males will also form groups up from five to ten members. Plains Zebras will form into large herds with one another, and other grazing species such as the Wildebeest.

    Zebra
Zebras are ungulates, which just means hoofed animals. They belong to the Equidae family, the horse family. Zebra have excellent eyesight and hearing. There are three main species of zebra: Plains Zebra, Mountain Zebra and Grevy’s Zebra. Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) are sometimes called common zebra, because they are the most common and geographically widespread. Plains subspecies include; Grant’s, Burchell’s, and Chapman’s or Damara. Grant’s zebras have a V-shaped pattern of stripes midway on their bodies. Burchell’s stripes are wider and become horizontal toward the rear. The zebra with dark and light stripes is the Damara (also called Damarland). There are two categories of Mountain Zebra: Hartman Mountain and Cape Mountain. Their stripes are narrow at the front and get wider at the back, while the rear spine and upper tail are marked with a zipper-like pattern. They also have something that no other equine has—a dewlap or wattle of flesh under the throat. These zebras are also good rock climbers. Grevy’s Zebras are thought to be the oldest zebra type. They have a short, thick neck. Their stripes are narrower than other zebras and have one long stripe that runs along their back, plus they have a white belly. Grevy’s are the biggest zebra, yet they need less water than other types. However, they are endangered by lost of habitat, competition with domestic animals for water, and by poachers killing them for their hides.
