The Great Migration
By Jennifer Steinberg Holland
Photographs by Anup and Manoj Shah
They're born to roam: East Africa's plains zebras follow the rains in one of the greatest migratory shows on Earth.
Read this compelling excerpt, or print the whole story.
Perhaps it was a playful doodle by the Designer of Wild Things that led to the zebra: a horse in costume (candy wrapper? prison garb?) animating Africa's vast stage. Why the dizzying stripes, with no two coats quite the same? No one's sure, but the pattern may repel insects or distort the animal's outline in dim light, confusing predators. Anup Shah and his brother, Manoj, spent a year photographing these flamboyant cousins to the horse, finding a visual feast in the animals' giant herds and athletic strides. "With zebras," says Anup, "you just point the camera at the fantastic view."

Grant's Zebra
Zebras in action! SWAHILI NAME: Punda Milia
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Zebras are odd-toed ungulates They have excellent eyesight, a keen sense of smell and are able to run at high speeds. In many ways, zebras are closer to asses than horses, having long ears, short stiff manes, tufted tails, and "chestnuts" confined to the front legs. As a whole, Grant's zebras are vertically striped in front, horizontally on the back legs, and diagonally on the rump and hind flanks. This causes a V-shaped junction pattern about the middle of the sides. Their color pattern renders them extremely conspicuous against green backgrounds, but almost invisible in tall grass, and very hard to make out on open dry plains because of the breakup of their outline by the complex striping. There is an extra layer of fat which occurs only under the black stripes which may get up to 18 degrees (10 degrees celesius) hotter than the white ones. They average 53 inches in height and weigh between 500 and 700 pounds. It is distinguished from other Plains zebras by the presence of leg striping down to the hooves and broad stripes on a white background. One outstanding feature of zebras is that, whatever the environment and even under extremely poor conditions, they all look sleek, fat, and contented. They are resistant to diseases that affect cattle.

Zebra Masks Give each child a paper plate with eye holes cut out of the center. Let the children paint vertical black stripes on the backs of their plates to make zebra faces. When the paint has dried, have the children glue on precut black construction paper nose and ear shapes. (To prevent smears, have them glue their ear shapes to the unpainted sides of their masks.) Display the finished masks on a wall or a bulletin board, or attach tongue depressors for handles and let the children use their masks for dramatic play.
Black and White Mural Collect several empty roll-on deodorant bottles. Remove the rollers from the bottles and wash the rollers and the bottles thoroughly. Fill the bottles with black tempera and replace the rollers. Put a large piece of white butcher paper on the floor. Give the children the paint-filled deodorant bottles and let them work together to create a black and white mural.

Wings in the Water – Main Aquarium, Level 1 Description of Animal
These zebras lose their stripes! As juveniles, these sharks have dark bodies with yellowish stripes. Once adults, the pattern changes to small dark spots on a grayish tan background. Because of this change, zebra sharks are often referred to as leopard sharks. Two more features make this shark difficult to confuse with any other: the prominent ridges running the length of the body and the impressive tail, which is nearly as long as the body itself. Aquarist's Note
As our divers feed animals in the Wings in the Water exhibit, you might notice the Zebra shark swimming extremely close to the divers – even between their legs. She is partially blind, and because of this we plan to train her to respond to sounds, so we can call her to a station when we feed her. When you visit, you might see the results of this training. Diet
Zebra sharks feed mainly on reef mollusks and crustaceans as well as small fish.

ORDER: Perissodactyla FAMILY: Equidae GENUS: Equus SPECIES: burchelli bohmi DESCRIPTION: GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT: From northern Zimbabwe to the Sudan in East Africa. Inhabits grasslands, especially those with scattered trees. DIET: In the wild, non-selective grazing of available grasses, especially grass stems and sheaths. Teeth very high crowned, an adaptation to chewing silica-rich grasses. Large barrel-shaped body holds a very large amount of relatively un-nutritious grass. Very dependent on water. At the zoo, they eat hay and alfalfa pellets fed inside at night. LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE: SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS: Capable of running 40 mph. Zebras use hooves and teeth in defense. There is much discussion about the adaptive value of stripes, but none of the theories has consensus. One theory is that all those black and white stripes break up the shape and make it not so recognizable as prey; another is that the stripes of a herd exploding in all directions make it difficult for a predator to focus on one animal. The stripes also confuse the tsetse flies who cannot see the zebra for the stripes. And finally, the stripe pattern on each zebra is individual and the learned pattern of each serves to bond zebras together as a family group. INTERPRETIVE INFORMATION: The zebra is the only grazer to have both upper and lower incisors; it can thus snip the grass blade (rather than yanking it out), exposing the tender under grasses for others. The antelope of the plains rely on the zebra to open up the grasslands for them, removing the tough outer layers to expose nutritious parts.
