Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area that relies on computational and statistical methods to solve biological problems. With the advancement of high throughput technologies, biological experiments now generate huge amount of data, ranging from genomic sequences to gene expression profiles and to protein structures. Obviously, it is no longer efficient to analyze the data from a genomics experiment with paper and pencil, or even spreadsheet. Instead, sophisticated database systems and data mining tools are required to manage and analyze the data.
The Bioinformatics Center at the Kansas State University was established in 2001 under the direction of Dr. Susan J. Brown . The primary goal of the center is to provide state-of-the-art bioinformatics support to biological researchers at KSU. It also serves as an active site for bioinformatics research and development in the state of Kansas.
The KSU Bioinformatics Center is funded by the NIH through the Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence ( K-INBRE ). The K-INBRE Bioinformatics Core was established to promote the use of bioinformatics in biomedical research. It provides bioinformatics support and educational programs to K-INBRE participants.

    Welcome to the MCW/MU Bioinformatics Program
    Years of research into new applications of mathematics, computer science, and engineering in the biomedical disciplines coupled with today's massive amounts of data and information, demonstrates the need to train practitioners and scientists in the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics. The joint M.S. degree is aimed primarily at prospective and career-changing students whose undergraduate and graduate education prepares them for a multi-disciplinary career in biomedical science using informatics. By scheduling many of the graduate level courses in the evening, the program allows for part-time graduate studies for students already active in full-time employment. The program is also suitable for more traditional, full-time graduate students. Graduates of the program have been successful in finding positions as bioinformatics specialist, computational biologist, computer programmer, senior research associate, and database specialist.

    Bioinformatics is a scientific field that combines biology and chemistry with math and computer science. By using bioinformatics, scientists can store, retrieve, analyze and interpret data from biological research within a computerized system. It’s applied in fields like molecular medicine, veterinary science and genetic research. In the future, medical professionals and biological scientists will use bioinformatics to transform massive amounts of raw data into an insightful understanding of the functions of genes, proteins and cells. It will lead to new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, pharmaceutical breakthroughs, and improved quality of life.

The first bioinformatics/biological databases were constructed a few years after the first protein sequences began to become available. The first protein sequence reported was that of bovine insulin in 1956 , consisting of 51 residues. Nearly a decade later, the first nucleic acid sequence was reported, that of yeast alanine tRNA with 77 bases. Just a year later, Dayhoff gathered all the availablesequence data to create the first bioinformatic database .The Protein DataBank followed in 1972 with a collectionof ten X-ray crystallographic protein structures, and the SWISSPROT protein sequence database began in 1987. A huge variety of divergent data resources of different typesand sizes are now available either in the public domain or more recently from commercial third parties. All of the original databases were organised in a very simpleway with data tries being stored in flat files, either one perentry, or as a single large text file.

Introduction
This tutorial allows you to explore opsins the proteins that catch light for our eyes and the genes that code for opsins. But the real subject of this exercise is bioinformatics the use of computers to search for, explore, and use information about genes, nucleic acids, and proteins. While learning about the human opsins, you will use some of today's most powerful bioinformatics tools. You can follow up this tutorial with a study of opsins from other organisms, or by exploring any class of biomolecules that interest you. I assume that you are conversant with biochemistry and molecular biology. If you see unfamiliar terms pertaining to the genes, mRNAs, and proteins used as examples here, break out your biochemistry text, head for the index, and review, review, review. For more information about each database or tool, go to its home page and read, read read.
