Biophysics is the application of the analytical viewpoints, methods and/or instrumentation of physics to the investigation of biological problems. By this definition the domain of biophysics is limited only by the imagination of biophysicists, and ranges over areas such as molecular structure and energetics, motility, and membrane structure and assembly. Our principal professional organization, The Biophysical Society, reflects this variety with Special Interest Subgroups in such diverse areas as Motility, Membrane Structure and Assembly, and Bioenergetics. Research in biophysics requires training in both the physical and the biological sciences.

    Biophysics - Definition
Biophysics (also biological physics ) is an interdisciplinary science that applies theories and methods of the physical sciences to questions of biology . Biophysics research today comprises a number of specific biological studies, which do not share a unique identifying factor, or subject themselves to clear and concise definitions. This is the result of biophysics' relatively recent appearance as a scientific discipline. The studies included under the umbrella of biophysics range from sequence comparison to neural networks . In the recent past, biophysics included creating mechanical limbs and nanomachines to regulate biological functions. Nowadays, these are more commonly referred to as belonging to the fields of bioengineering and nanotechnology respectively. We may expect these definitions to further refine themselves. In the first two years, students take foundation courses in math, physics, chemistry and biology. In the second two years, students take specialized courses in biophysics, physics and biology. They also do at least two semesters of independent research. This curriculum prepares students to succeed in today’s interdisciplinary research and technology environment. Click for more information: 'Biophysics is one of the more laid back natural science majors in terms of student interaction with each other and with faculty. I never met a biophysics major who wouldn't help me with a homework assignment or a Biophysics professor who was too busy with another student to answer a question, write a letter of recommendation, or just to have a chat.'

    By Nasif Nahle, biologist
Biophysics is a sub-discipline of the Biology that studies the physical principles underlying all the processes of the living systems.
    Biophysics is a reductionistic science
because it determines that all the phenomena observed in nature have a predictable scientific explanation.
The life is a function of state that depends on stochastic processes at microscopic level (microphysical laws) and deterministic processes at macroscopic level (macrophysical laws). The biophysics' subjects of study are both, stochastic and deterministic processes.
A stochastic system is a system whose microscopic states have random underlying causes. A deterministic system is a system whose microscopic states have knowable underlying causes.
Biophysics is not a branch of physics, but of Biology. I make this clarification because in many books of biophysics it is said that biophysics is the study of the biological processes from the point of view of physics, which is erroneous because the physics is not limited to the study of the biological processes but of the processes taking place in the whole nature. Biophysics explains the biological phenomena applying physical principles.
For example, biophysics studies the changes of polarity in the microtubules of Paramecium, or the transference of energy from one to another molecule of the complex molecular engine known as ATP synthase, or the mechanics of a human skeleton, or the dynamics of fluids of a grasshopper, etc.

    Biophysics Program
Beginning in the 1930's and continuing to the present, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has developed and maintained a strong tradition in cutting-edge molecular biophysics. Graduate training in Biophysics is organized through two distinct but very closely allied programs: the Biophysics Graduate Degree Program, which confers the Ph.D. in Biophysics to its graduates, and the Molecular Biophysics Training Program, a program built around an NIH NRSA Institutional Training Grant awarded through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The two programs are coordinated through a common leadership and administrative structure to bring together the UW Biophysics community around mutual interests and needs. The training grant provides funds to help recruit, encourage and support a selected group of graduate students in this important area. A student applies to the Biophysics Degree Program through the formal admissions process; applications to Biophysics and other participating programs (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physiology, and others) are further evaluated to decide on offers of a NIH training grant position.
