Lysteria in motion (courtesy of the Theriot lab) The Stanford Biophysics Program is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental training program leading to the Ph.D. Degree in biophysics. The program centers on understanding biological function in terms of physical and chemical principles. The Program comprises faculty from 16 departments in the Schools of Humanities and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. Research in the Program involves two overlapping branches of biophysics: the application of physical and chemical principles and methods to solving biological problems, and the development of new methods. The Biophysics Program aims to train students in quantitative approaches to biological problems, while also developing their perspective in choosing forefront biological problems. A balanced academic program is tailored to the diverse backgrounds of the students. The program requires graduate-level coursework in physical and biological sciences, participation in seminar series, and most importantly achievement of a high level of proficiency in independent research. Overview:
Biophysics is the application of physics to biological systems. This interdisciplinary field is quickly growing in the modern scientific community.
    Major Innovations:
    Current Work:
Some of the major work in current biophysics relates to work in the nervous system. Specifically, there is a lot of interest in how neurons transfer electrochemical signals.
Francis Crick has devoted over 20 years to the question of how the brain forms consciousness. RogerPenrose, another physicist, has applied the concepts of quantum physics to state his belief that consciousness is a manifestation of quantum phenomona, refuting beliefs that the brain can be simulated in complex computer systems. Penrose and others have tried to show how this quantum nature could manifest, but there is currently no proof for the hypothesis.
Preparing for a Career in Biophysics:
More and more colleges are offering degree programs in biophysics, although many people doing work in the field have different degrees. Studying physics and biology disciplines obviously are most applicable, although in-depth knowledge of chemistry and mathematics helps. Medical physics, biochemistry, mathematical physics, molecular physics, chemical physics, and similar fields are all fields to consider in pursuing a biophysics career.

The primary interest in Jacquelyn Fetrow's laboratory is understanding the relationship between protein structure, motion and function. A better understanding of the inter-relationship between these features will be valuable in the design of better and more specific compounds for the pharmaceutical drug discovery process. The members of Dr. Fetrow's group conduct research in three distinct, but related, areas: 1) computational analysis of functional sites in proteins, with a goal of automated identification of mechanistic and specificity determinants at molecular functional sites; 2) development of methods to model biological networks from experimental time course data, with the goal of understanding how networks of molecular signals cause or influence the behavior of biological systems; and 3) analysis of molecular dynamics and motion in proteins, with the goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms by which long-range communication occurs in these molecules. The research is interdisciplinary, involving students from math, computer science, physics, chemistry and biology and collaborations with many experimental researchers. For more information, see Prof. Fetrow's

    What is Biophysics?
Biophysics can be generally defined as the study of biological systems from the perspective of the physical sciences. This is the field of science that explains how physical phenomena like mechanics electricity, magnetism, light, heat, and nuclear radiation related to the structure and the function of biological systems. As such, biophysics encompasses many areas of interest, including:

    Biophysics as Preparation
The study of biophysics is about more than just commanding facts — instead, biophysics trains you to work through problems like a physical scientist. That is, you'll learn to devise theoretical constructs to piece together seemingly disconnected facts. You'll develop the discipline to ask yourself routinely "Does this hypothesis make sense given from what is known about the dynamics of this biological system? Can I make a theoretical prediction based on exact physical principles?" This rigorous attitude is becoming increasingly important in the biological sciences as the field attempts to deal with the overwhelming amount of microscopic information derived from advanced scientific instrumentation.

    Introduction
The program is designed to nurture independent, creative scientists. Applicants for graduate training should have sound preliminary training in a physical or quantititative science; especially chemistry, physics, computer science, or mathematics. The primary objective of the program is to educate and train individuals with this background to apply the concepts and methods of the physical sciences to the solution of biological problems. Initiated in 1959 by Arthur K. Solomon, the Committee on Higher Degrees in Biophysics at Harvard University has a long history of important research achievements. Over 60 faculty members from departments including Physics, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Engineering Sciences, the Division of Applied Sciences, the Division of Medical Sciences (Genetics, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Systems Biology, and the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology), the teaching Hospitals (Children¹s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital), and the Dana-Farber Cancer institute participate in the training of students in the Biophysics Program. Faculty affiliated with the Harvard-MIT program in Health Science and Technology (HST) can also serve as research advisors. Owing to the interdepartmental nature of the program, a student's research options are increased greatly. Research programs may be pursued in any of the departments or hospitals mentioned.

    BIOPHYSICS
Biophysics, also known as biological physics, is an interdisciplinary science that applies the principles of physics and chemistry and the methods of mathematical analysis and computer modeling to understand how the mechanisms of biological systems work.
Biophysics is a molecular science that seeks to explain biological function in terms of the molecular structures and properties of specific molecules. The size of these molecules varies dramatically, from small fatty acids and sugars (1 nanometer (nm), or the equivalent of three atoms in width), to macromolecules such as proteins (5 to 10 nm), to starches (greater than 1,000 nm and longer than the thickness of a human hair), to the enormously elongated DNA molecules (more than 1 centimeter long but only 20 nm wide, or the scaled equivalent of a piece of string 45 miles long). These biomolecules, the sole building blocks of living organisms, assemble into cells, tissues and whole organisms by forming complex individual structures that are visible under a light microscope.
Biophysics can trace its roots back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who first developed hypotheses about the physical basis for consciousness and perception. It underwent rapid development after World War II, stimulated in part by the application of nuclear physics to biological systems, including the investigation of radiation effects on living matter. In the course of these studies, physicists were introduced to biologists and biological problems, and biophysics evolved as a new scientific field.
