Our mission is to discover, maintain, and transmit knowledge concerning basic plant biology and provide leadership in the biological sciences. Students and researchers have access to leading-edge microscopy facilities , an 8,000 square foot greenhouse complex , a unique APGII-organized garden , and the Wisconsin State Herbarium 's 1,000,000 specimens. Our degree programs offer studies in molecular, genetic, cellular, and developmental biology, through physiology, structural botany, molecular systematics, taxonomy, ecology, ethnobotany and evolution. Visitors to this site will find botanical resources for identifying plant species and for growing plants in the greenhouse and garden. This site also offers images of plants, algae and fungi, and a wealth of information for research, classroom and personal education. Birge Hall

  • Botany Duties Botany is the systematic study of plant life, including fungi and molds. Within botany, there are specializations such as taxonomy, conservation, plant physiology and genetics. Each of these specializations has slightly different duties and responsibilities. However, some of the duties a botanist are predictable across the specialties. Science Projects About Botany Botany, the study of plant life, can be turned into an enjoyable science project if you know how to approach the idea. Whether you use food coloring to change the color of a flower, or planting seeds in different types of fertilizer to compare the plant's growth, you are using a scientific method to answer a hypothesis. Flower Parts in Botany Flowers are an important part of ecosystems because they form symbiotic relationships with bees, which need their pollen and nectar for survival. Many plants' existence is also reliant upon flowers. Flowers are parts of plants where reproduction occurs and fruit is developed. They reproduce through sexual reproduction, which produces... Careers in the Field of Botany Deciding what to do for a career is one of the most difficult decisions people have to face. Those who have an interest in plants should consider a career in botany. Before deciding to go into this field you should research each career choice and try to picture yourself doing it.

    Reaper Protein Initiates Cell Death
Friday October 29, 2010 This cell is undergoing programmed cell death.
In an attempt to gain a better understanding of the naturally occurring process apoptosis , or programmed cell death, researchers are focusing on a specific protein called the Reaper. Cells don't continually destroy themselves because polymers called inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) work to inhibit cellular self-destruct sequences. Reaper proteins initiate cell death by inhibiting IAPs. By better understanding the process of cell death, researchers hope to be able to target and destroy certain cells , such as cancer cells, while leaving other cells unharmed.

    Welcome
Students decide to major in the biological sciences for many reasons. Some enjoy the outdoors and wonder about the plants and animals they've seen. Others are curious about the causes and cures of diseases, or they want to become involved in land management and environmental protection. Whatever the reason, you'll find that the University of Wyoming offers a wide variety of opportunities. Within a short distance of the University of Wyoming's campus are short grass prairies, sagebrush-dominated foothills, coniferous forests, mountain lakes, and alpine meadows. These diverse environments, combined with modern research laboratories, provide abundant opportunities for research and teaching in the plant sciences. Many have found the study of plants and fungi to be an excellent starting point for their studies in science. The program provides a broad range of knowledge, leading to a variety of employment opportunities . Since 1887 we've helped students develop their interests in subjects as diverse as botany, mycology, zoology, agriculture, molecular biology, wildlife management, and general biology. Today, the Botany Department offers a wide variety of

These papers cover a range of disciplines from molecular and cellular physiology and biochemistry through whole plant physiology to community physiology. Every issue of the Journal contains at least one 'Perspective' article. These are most commonly reviews of research areas, which are particularly exciting and important, topical or controversial. Opinion articles are also considered. In addition to 12 regular issues, at least one Special Issue is published each year. These are collections of articles derived from a specialised meeting or conference session. All papers are fully reviewed, and we will endeavour to complete the review process with all speed.
