  • Christopher Wylie, PhD , studies the differentiation of the germ line, and its contribution to the development of the early embryo. In particular we study the behavior of early germ line cells, and the control of patterning of the early embryo by stored mRNAs and proteins in the oocyte, including the formation of the primary germ layers, and the role of the cytoskeleton in controling the architecture of the embryo. • Bruce Aronow, PhD , uses genomic and computational approaches to investigate gene regulation, biological pathways, and developmental and disease mechanisms. The goals of this work are to better understand health and disease processes, the impact of individual human gene mutations and polymorphisms, and to study the structural, functional, and evolutionary basis of biological systems. The Laboratory for Developmental Biology was established to help scientists at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and the University of Texas conduct research that requires the production of transgenic and knock-out animal models of human diseases. Genetically-altered animals, called transgenic and "knock-out" animals, represent invaluable models of human genetic diseases. In these animals, candidate genes are inserted or deleted in order to study the role that specific gene products play in the pathogenesis of different diseases. During the last five years, the Laboratory for Developmental Biology has produced over five hundred new, transgenic and knock-out mouse lines for scientists from the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine, the University of Texas, Baylor College of Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Some of the animal models generated at this Core Facility were instrumental in the discovery of new genes that have important roles in the development of heart disease, asthma and cancer, just to name a few. By working together with and helping scientists to advance their research, the Core Facility has become an integral and valued component of the University.

Human Reproduction and Fertilisation - Developmental Biology
For the human species to continue surviving, it is essential that mature adults are capable of producing fertile offspring, to continue the existance of the species and pass on genetic information from generation to generation. This is done via reproduction. The following is a step by step basis of how reproduction occurs from beginning to end.
    Gametes
Before the initial cell can develop into a mature adult, the building blocks to create that cell must be available before fertilisation can occur. Cells called gametes are produced by mature adults via meiosis which contain half the genetic information needed to produce the final cell capable of growth.
