Miami Institute for Human Genomics Receives $20M Gift for Research
Institute Renamed John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics The Miller School’s Miami Institute for Human Genomics, nationally known for its groundbreaking work in unraveling some of the medical mysteries behind autism and other common diseases, today received a $20 million gift to support its critical research efforts. “Today is an absolutely memorable and fantastic day,” Goldschmidt said at the announcement ceremony, an occasion he called “extraordinarily significant” because it is a commitment to the eventual eradication of certain diseases, and because few academic institutions are benefiting from large gifts in a slow economy. “One can count gifts of $20 million or more to any institution over the past six months on the fingers of two hands,” Goldschmidt continued. “The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is up there with top medical schools such as Stanford and Yale for receiving such a large gift. The gift is also extraordinary because of the field he is supporting. Genetics is the best opportunity we have to predict the occurrence of illnesses in a given individual.” President Shalala said the announcement marked “an incredible day” for the University, the medical school and the institute, which was created two years ago and has received an $80 million economic grant from the State of Florida and support from the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation.

Branches in genetics Biology portal ... e Genomics is a discipline in genetics concerning the study of the genomes of organisms. The field includes intensive efforts to determine the entire DNA sequence of organisms and fine-scale genetic mapping efforts. The field also includes studies of intragenomic phenomena such as heterosis epistasis pleiotropy and other interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. In contrast, the investigation of the roles and functions of single genes is a primary focus of molecular biology or genetics and is a common topic of modern medical and biological research. Research of single genes does not fall into the definition of genomics unless the aim of this genetic, pathway, and functional information analysis is to elucidate its effect on, place in, and response to the entire genome's networks. For the United States Environmental Protection Agency , "the term "genomics" encompasses a broader scope of scientific inquiry associated technologies than when genomics was initially considered. A genome is the sum total of all an individual organism's genes. Thus, genomics is the study of all the genes of a cell, or tissue, at the DNA (genotype), mRNA (transcriptome), or protein (proteome) levels."

What is pharmacogenomics?
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how an individual's genetic inheritance affects the body's response to drugs. The term comes from the words pharmacology and genomics and is thus the intersection of pharmaceuticals and genetics.

Posted by John Williams August 22, 2008 One of the reasons that I learned to love revisions in wordpress is because I tried to write an article several weeks ago about the  Personal Genome Project  [PGP], a successor to the Human Genome Project Almost every day now it seems that we find more and more in the news regarding genetic discovery.  Personal Genomics is becoming available and possibly even trendy.  Take for instance this news reporter who decided to get three opinions Wired Magazine recently did an article on how Personal Genomics could unlock the mysteries of life .  The interesting thing about it is that Church, who started personalgenomes.com Holy Grail of Stem Cell research itself, making stem cells from adult skin cells. If you consider the medicinal possibilities of non-controversial stem cells derived from adult skin cells, as opposed to extremely controversial stem cells derived from embryoes, or even cloning Of course, Lanza does paint some interesting possibilities about treatments and life extension, assuming that we can get past the philosophical debate raging around some of the more controversial methods of obtaining these benefits. Human Genomics
This workshop focuses on the use of Nobel Prize winning technology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), to analyze the genetic complement (genome) of humans. Participants perform experiments to identify several types of polymorphisms in their own DNA. Mitochondrial (mt) DNA Haplotypes examines polymorphisms in the non-coding control region of mtDNA. Amplified mtDNA is sequenced at the CSHL Genome Sequencing Center and analyzed to answer the question, "Was Neanderthal our direct ancestor?" Human Indel Polymorphism amplifies DNA from chromosome 16 to look for the presence of an inserted "jumping gene." Participants then use the DNALC's Allele and Simulation Server tools to explore human population genetics. Variable Number Tandem Repeat (VNTR) Polymorphism examines a region on chromosome 1 that contains from 14-40 repeats of a 16 base pair DNA sequence. This type of polymorphism is used in forensic biology to identify individuals from material collected at crime scenes. Human Taste Polymorphism is a new experiment that examines a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in a taste receptor gene that correlates with the ability to taste the bitter chemical phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). This experiment illustrates the relationship between SNP haplotypes and complex phenotypes.
