Welcome to the NSI website! The Norwegian Society for Immunology (NSI) is an association of immunologists in Norway (Norsk selskap for immunologi). The NSI arranges meetings with national and international speakers, and NSI members can take advantage of meeting travel grants and free copies of the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology. Volunteers are elected to the Board at the annual general meeting, and we are always delighted to hear from members or others who have comments or suggestions, especially when suggesting speakers! We depend on all our members to be able to remain prosperous and continue our activities throughout the year . So please inform your colleagues and friends about NSI and encourage them to join . Immunology Program Web Site The Immunology Graduate Program focuses on the central role played by the immune response in normal function and in disease.  Immunology is a growing and exciting field of science, spanning work as diverse as basic research on the molecular regulation of differentiation to studies of malignancies and major infectious disease. Because of the diversity of conditions and systems affected by immunological processes, our trainees are well-equipped to approach an array of biomedical research problems when they complete our program. The Immunology Program participates in the MERGE-ID (Medically-oriented Research in Graduate Education) track.  This program is specifically designed to provide strong training in the basic microbiology and immunology of pathogenic organisms and host responses as well as in-depth knowledge of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and epidemiology of infectious disease. This program is unique, integrating clinical studies and patient contact throughout the training period. Please visit the  MERGE-ID web site for more information.

    Overview
The Division of Immunology provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for both children and adults with a suspected or known primary immune deficiency disorder (PIDD). We see patients referred from throughout the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) and serve as a tertiary referral base for a regional population of more than 10 million. We also evaluate and treat PIDD patients referred from throughout the U.S. and abroad. Members of our faculty each have active research programs within the Center for Immunity and Immunotherapies (CIIT) at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Our faculty have played key roles in identifying the molecular basis for many of the now more than 140 molecularly defined PIDD’s, and in pioneering clinical care for these diseases. Our faculty also work closely with members of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) to coordinate care for PIDD patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplants . As part of this work, our clinicians utilize cutting-edge protocols to optimize successful transplantation while concurrently limiting its associated toxicities.

Navigate Immunology:
Welcome to Immunology
Recognizing the need to create an environment where researchers could be adequately trained in the multifaceted aspects of immunobiology, Penn became the first medical school to establish a separate degree-granting Ph.D. program in Immunology. The faculty of the Immunology Graduate Group (IGG) are drawn from eight different units of the University of Pennsylvania, encompassing a broad spectrum of research interests: The College of Arts and Sciences The School of Medicine the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Children's Hospital of Philadelphia ... the Wistar Institute ; and the Institute for Cancer Research The IGG has also established a partnership with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The partnership brings to the IGG the extraordinary resources and scientific expertise present at the NIH, one of the largest and most renowned biomedical research centers in the world. Students have the opportunity to interact with NIH faculty in a variety of ways, including conducting a lab rotation or thesis work at the NIH. This cross-departmental and institutional organization fosters a unique collaborative environment that allows students to develop research projects combining the expertise of multiple faculty members. At present, there are approximately 80 faculty members in Penn's Immunology Graduate Group, encompassing a broad spectrum of research studies. Faculty research includes structural studies of immunologically relevant molecules, studies regarding the development and regulation of the immune system, and studies of fundamental molecular and cellular biology of the immune system. Research results are being utilized in both experimental models and clinical trials attempting to fight diseases.

Immunology is the study of the immune system . Immune systems are biological systems that organisms use to prevent invasion and parasitism by other organisms. The simplest form of it is the DNA restriction system evolved in bacteria to prevent infection by bacteriophages Usually, Immunology is taken to mean the study of mammalian immune systems, which are much more complex, and also prone to much error.
change Innate immunity
There are two broad, artificial subdivisions of mammalian immune systems: the innate (or natural) and the acquired (or adaptive). The innate immune system is usually meant to encompass cells and systems in the mammalian immune system that does not require previous exposure to a particular pathogen for function. Study of these focuses often on errors of the immune system, which often cause more damage than what they are detecting and reacting to. In effect, the immune system is what decides "what is part of this body" by ignoring its intervention. Some infections, like HIV exploit the limits or weaknesses of the human immune system very effectively and able to make themselves part of the body. Artificial means are often used to restore immune system function in an HIV-challenged body, and prevent the onset of

Whereas in the past our program had a strong basic science emphasis, in recent years, we have added an increased emphasis on mechanisms of disease pathology.
Many opportunities remain for immunologists to contribute to better health of the US and world populations and our students and post-doctoral fellows learn about these issues as well as fundamental immunology.
