MykoWeb:
Welcome to MykoWeb , WWW pages devoted to the science of mycology (the study of the fungi) and the hobby of mushrooming (the pursuit of mushrooms). It is a production of Michael Wood , a past president of the Mycological Society of San Francisco MykoWeb was started in the fall of 1995 and was one of the first internet mycology mushrooming sites.
The Fungi of California
The main attraction at MykoWeb is The Fungi of California , an expanded version of the former "Fungi of the San Francisco Bay Area". The Fungi of California contains photographs over species of mushrooms and other fungi found in California, with over of the species with descriptions. There are currently over total photographs of the mushrooms. Included are links to other online descriptions and photos of the species treated plus references to common field guides. Also included is a Glossary of mycological terms and a Bibliography of useful mycological references. The Fungi of California is a joint project of Michael Wood and Fred Stevens.

Mycology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A mushroom is a reproductive structure of a fungus. Mycology (from the Greek μύκης, mukēs, meaning "fungus") is the branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi , including their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy and their use to humans as a source for tinder medicinals (e.g., penicillin ), food (e.g., beer wine cheese edible mushrooms ) and entheogens , as well as their dangers, such as poisoning or infection From mycology arose the field of phytopathology , the study of plant diseases, and the two disciplines remain closely related because the vast majority of plant pathogens are fungi. A biologist who studies mycology is called a mycologist Historically, mycology was a branch of botany (fungi are evolutionarily more closely related to animals than to plants but this was not recognized until a few decades ago). Pioneer mycologists included Elias Magnus Fries Christian Hendrik Persoon Anton de Bary and Lewis David von Schweinitz Today the most comprehensively studied and understood fungi are yeasts and eukaryotic model organisms Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe Many fungi produce toxins antibiotics and other secondary metabolites . For example the cosmopolitan (worldwide) genus Fusarium and their toxins associated with fatal outbreaks of alimentary toxic aleukia in humans were extensively studied by Abraham Joffe Fungi are fundamental for life on earth in their roles as symbionts , e.g. in the form of

Mycology
Over 100 years of expertise in fungal taxonomy
For more than a century mycologists at Kew have helped to increase our knowledge of the fungal kingdom by identifying and describing new families, new genera, new species, in Britain and overseas. Each year over 4,000 specimens are received at Kew from more than 30 countries around the world for expert determination. Kew mycologists have pioneered research into tropical and equatorial fungi from the Amazon to Australia, working in collaboration with overseas research institutes and universities. Following our move to more spacious premises, we can also offer improved research facilities for mycological visitors from abroad. In Britain, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew provides an expert service offering practical assistance with medical problems, legal and forensic consultation, and advice on wood-rotting fungi.

Welcome to the IMA
The International Mycological Association, founded in 1971, represents the interests of over 30,000 mycologists worldwide.
It is a non profit organization, the purpose of which is the encouragement of mycology in all its branches. Mycology is the study of all aspects of the fungi. This implies that the IMA should strive to promote mycology in its widest sense. For the coming four year term and until the IMC congress at Edinburgh in 2010, the Executive Committee and the Officers of the IMA will strive to:
  • Provide useful information and links on the website, to strengthen mycological integration and collaboration; Promote open access of mycological journals and books, and support the flagship journals of our science to be more competitive with those of other sciences; Establish online repositories under the auspices and management of the IMA, to which members can contribute and own; Establish a promotional platform for all aspects of mycology in the IMA, which would enhance the visibility of our science.

It was founded in 1961 initially as Sabouraudia , but underwent a name change to Journal of Medical and Veterinary Mycology from 1986-1997. The current name was introduced in 1998. The present Editor-in-Chief (as of 2007) is Dr. Ira Salkin. The journal provides an international forum for original and review articles on the diagnosis, treatment, immunology, molecular biology and epidemiology of invasive and allergically mediated fungal diseases of humans and animals, as well as the biosystematics, ecology, and genomics of the fungi causing these diseases. According to the ISI Journal Citation Report, the journal's Impact factor for 2006 is 2.005
