The major research in this department includes endocrinology, exercise science, neurophysiology, and pulmonary and sensory physiology. Since a number of the Physiology faculty hold primary appointments in clinical departments, the Physiology program is an ideal vehicle for students looking to apply basic science research techniques to clinically relevant biomedical problems such as bone tumors, diabetes, osteoporosis, kidney disease and lung disease. Experimental approaches range from studies on whole animals and isolated tissues to studies of cellular and molecular events. Scientific inquiry may include the complex interactions of systems in the whole individual, the orchestration of processes integrating organ and cell function, and/or integration of molecular events within individual cells. Graduate Program in Integrative Biology and Physiology
Graduate Program Overview Sample PhD Curriculum Faculty and Research Laboratories Laboratories Actively Seeking Students ... IBP Grad Handbook (click for PDF) Message from the Director of Graduate Studies Welcome! Physiology may be defined as the application of mathematics, physics, and chemistry to the study of structure and function in living systems. As such, physiology is a "hybrid" field in which expertise from many other disciplines is ordinarily required and combined. The program emphasizes a quantitative approach to understanding the functions of cells, organs, and systems in living animals. Ph.D. students take a core concentration that provides a broad background in the physiology of membranes, cells, transport, and organ systems. Individualized programs are structured to build on the student's strengths and to fill in gaps that would otherwise be an impediment to specific problem solving. Teaching experience is also available to all students. Areas of specialization include cardiovascular, respiratory, membrane and transport processes, cell physiology, and to a limited extent, exercise, gastrointestinal physiology, and endocrinology. We are glad you are interested in the IBP graduate program and wish you success in your endeavors!

We can study these processes at the genetic, cellular, organ system or whole-animal level. Our departmental name reflects the increasing application of molecular biology techniques in the understanding of physiological function. Understanding the basic concepts of physiological control of organ systems in the human body is key to identifying regulatory processes during organ dysfunction and disease states which, in turn, may elucidate a novel approach in therapeutic intervention. SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMS
The Department of Physiology and Biophysics Summer Undergraduate Research Program is an important component of the departmental educational effort. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to obtain first-hand research experience in a state-of-the-art research environment. The immediate goal is to provide students with a rewarding and confidence-building experience. The ultimate goal is to foster new careers in biomedical research. Candidates who are interested in this program must have a genuine interest in exploring career options in biomedical research.
    STUDENT PARTICIPATION
The program accepts undergraduates from universities nationwide. Approximately 60% of our SURP students are from Ohio universities and the remaining students matriculate from across the country. The program is available for sophomores, juniors and seniors and an option exists for a second year of participation based on interest and performance. The program accepts a maximum of fifteen students per summer and only one student per laboratory.
    THE PROGRAM
During the first several days of the program, the mentor and the student identify an appropriate research project and write a single page proposal describing the planned research. This proposal is signed by the student and the sponsoring faculty mentor and is then submitted for approval to the SURP Program Director, Dr. Andrea Romani. This document becomes the blueprint for the summers work. It describes the scientific background underpinning the proposal, describes the techniques to be used, and sets out goals to be accomplished during the summer.
