About The Department of Physiology
What is Physiology?
Physiology is the study of how the activities of genes, cells, tissues and organs are integrated to accomplish the complex functions performed by living organisms. Because of the structural and functional complexity of even simple organisms, physiologists draw upon knowledge available from many different scientific disciplines such as molecular and cellular biology, physics, mathematics, and biochemistry. From a medical perspective, understanding normal function is a prerequisite to understanding disease. Mission of the Department
The philosophy of the department is that excellence requires intelligence, commitment, intensity of effort, and a nurturing environment. Our primary objective is to provide the resources, ambience and opportunities that foster excellence in scholarship and research among faculty, medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. This is accomplished by having faculty who are recognized researchers and scholars in their fields, talented and stimulating teachers, and committed to effective intra-and interdepartmental collaboration. Educational Program
The purpose of our education program is to provide medical and graduate students with a clear understanding of physiological principles, concepts, and mechanisms which form the basis of medical practice and which are at the forefront of our knowledge. Additionally, we strive to provide an approach to learning that will carry over into the students' subsequent education and career. Training in human physiology provides the opportunity to think conceptually and solve problems as one does in medical practice.

BSc Physiology and Pharmacology
UCAS course codes: BB12 (full-time) and BBC2 (with foundation year) Physiology is concerned with the function of the human body , whilst Pharmacology is the science of drugs the understanding of the way biological systems can be modified by chemical agents. Both disciplines are therefore closely related and complementary to one another. Together, they form a major core of study in pre-clinical and clinical medicine, but are rightly recognised as subjects in their own right. Extensive knowledge of physiological processes and how drugs can modify them is therefore vital if disease states are to be understood and new drug treatments developed to combat them. In addition, drugs can be used as research tools for unravelling fundamental physiological and cellular mechanisms.
Course Overview
The BSc Honours Physiology and Pharmacology course provides a comprehensive grounding in these two closely related sciences, with special emphasis upon cutting-edge, research-led lecture, tutorial and practical skills material. Formal lectures are supported by an extensive tutorials programme, many of which use a case study and problem-based learning approach.

Neuroscience and Physiology
The Neuroscience and Physiology program is directed by Rodolfo Llinás, MD PhD, Chairman of the Department of Physiology and Neuroscience, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a member of the MSTP training faculty. Doctoral candidates can study membrane physiology, cellular physiology, synaptic transmission, cellular neurophysiology, developmental neurobiology, molecular neurobiology, brain cell microenvironment, computer-based anatomy, and neuronal modeling. A diverse curriculum is offered to students through courses taught by faculty in several basic medical science departments, including physiology and neuroscience, biochemistry, cell biology, and pharmacology as well as the Center for Neural Science located at the Washington Square campus. The program has been reorganized significantly over the past year. There is a new program office located in the Smilow Research Building, in which Stewart Bloomfield, PhD (who serves on the MSTP Faculty Operating Committee) serves as a coordinator and Eric Lang, MD, PhD (a graduate of our MSTP), is graduate advisor. This office coordinates all graduate courses and neuroscience seminars offered at the medical school as joint efforts with the Center for Neural Science (CNS) at Washington Square campus in an effort to integrate the courses offered by both programs. At present, the core neuroscience courses are team-taught by both faculties and are attended by students within both graduate programs. Further
